After having been president of the automaker's DesignworksUSA studio in Newbury Park, California, since 2004, Verena Kloos is now headed to BMW AG's Munich studio to be responsible for context design and advanced development. Kloos came to BMW in 2004 after having worked with Daimler for eight years. Her last job there was as president of the Stuttgart-based automaker's advanced design studio in Como, Italy. In addition, Kloos has held key design jobs with Volkswagen AG and Mazda Motor Corp. She has a bachelor's degree in design from the University of Fine Arts, in Brunswick, Germany. Replacing Kloos is Laurenz Schaffer, an 11-year veteran of BMW's design staff set to take charge of the California studio on Dec. 1. Having joined BMW in 1998, Schaffer had led the Munich branch of DesignworksUSA since 2000. From 2003 to 2006, he also was in charge of BMW's lifestyle design group.
