Verizon ordered 576 Chevrolet Silverado Two-Mode hybrid vehicles, a move that's sure to encourage big US fleet operators who have increased their fuel efficiency and reduced their emission levels. Verizon, the American broadband and telecommunications company, had approached General Motors Co. about getting green cars for their urban drivers. Brian Small, GM Fleet and Commercial Operation general manager, said that GM immediately suggested the Silverado Hybrid due to its "outstanding city and highway MPG ratings."
He revealed that GM rushed to start work so that it could deliver the vehicles before its July deadline. The Silverado uses a hybrid system that consists of an internal combustion engine and battery-powered electric motors.
The Silverado can reach an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 22 mpg highway and can run with speeds of up to 30 mph on electricity. The Silverado's other hybrid mode enables the Vortec 6.0L V8 engine, which has an output of 332hp and 367 lb.-ft of torque, to work in a V4 mode. This means that the Silverado consumes 40% less fuel than conventional full-size pickups.
