The Scion FR-S Sports coupe concept made its world debut at the 2011 New York Auto Show. This rear-wheel-drive sports car is the product of the collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. The fact that this car will be powered by a boxer four-cylinder engine wasn’t kept a secret but it had been unclear if the Toyota version of the car would get a Scion badge for the U.S. market. It was leaked last fall from a meeting attended by Toyota dealers that the car, which at that time was known as the Toyota FT-86, would be offered as a Scion in the U.S.
The “FR-S,” which stands for ‘Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport’ is a precursor to a new Scion model that will enter the lineup in 2012. The Scion FR-S Sports coupe concept is the spiritual successor to the AE86 Corolla, which is a model that’s admired due to its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, well balanced chassis, and light curb weight. The vehicle is powered by a Subaru boxer engine. It was earlier rumored that it would be a force-induced powerplant but it turned out to be a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter one.
The D4-S injection system from Toyota is what the engine uses. Both direct and port injection are used to raise horsepower and torque. It also maintains fuel economy rates. It’s likely that there will be a turbocharged model later on. Options for its transmission include a six-speed manual or automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The package also includes a limited-slip differential that helps in distributing power. It’s to be expected that since this is a concept, it features some aggressive styling features that won’t be seen on the production version.
