Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-24 unveiled

Mercedes MP-24 F1 MonopostBecause of the changes in rules prior to the 2009 season, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-24, with new bodywork and the addition of slick tires, demonstrates a considerable shift in design from its world champion predecessor. Besides its revolutionary appearance, it also comes with a skew of new ground-breaking highlights, such as a sophisticated KERS. This season's aerodynamic regulations framed by the FIA and the Overtaking Working Group (OWG) that dealt with the issues affecting F1 are the two main factors that altered the appearance of the car compared with its predecessors while retaining unique range appearance established in the MP4-22 and MP4-23. The influence of OWG is apparent around the front wing, which was broadened to boost front-end load when closely following another vehicle, and a more compact rear wing to reduce interference to the rear view. Further changes to enhance aerodynamics is the removal of ancillary appendages, the inclusion of driver-adaptable front-wing flaps and the greatly modified diffiuser. The KERS of the MP4-24 is a collaborative development between McLaren and Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines. The maximum KERS yield is 60kW/500kJ with an additionl discharge of 80bhp for 6.66 per lap, the chief focus of the engineering unit is to enhance further its integration with the chassis to lower performance loss. A 0.4-0.6 gain per lap is expected from an optimized KERS package.
