At the world's toughest rally that will be conducted in January 2010, the Volkwagen Amarok will have the chance to prove that it is indeed durable, robust and able to tackle any type of road. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is the "Official Supplier" to the Dakar Rally and a partner to the organizer, the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.). The VW new pickup will be the Support Vehicle for the rally. Moreover, the organizer will use 20 Amarok vehicles, while 15 of these will be used as press and shuttle vehicles. From January 1 to 17, 2010, the Dakar Rally will see four teams from Volkswagen Motorsport as well as many other teams travelling 9,000 km through Argentina and Chile. Buenos Aires is where the rally is set to start and finish. During the Dakar Rally, the Amarok will undergo an endurance test. It will be faced with all the challenges of the demanding stages. The Amarok will be tested as the organizer's vehicle to reconnoiter the rally stages, as a press vehicle and as a shuttle for the Volkswagen Motorsport team. There will be additional off-road conversions for the trip for four of the Volkswagen Amarok from the A.S.O. fleet. Four Panamericana multivans will also be used. Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director, said that the company is pleased about using the Volkswagen Amarok as its Support Vehicle since the Dakar Rally demands the highest levels of technical perfection, reliability and endurance from its Race Touareg and its support vehicles. He calls the Amarok as exactly the right vehicle for [the] team.
