Volkswagen is building new plug-in hybrid for U.S. market

2013 Vw Jetta Hybrid

Volkswagen is developing a plug-in hybrid for the U.S. market and will be on sale soon, according to reports. The car is still in development, but it should be ready for sale relatively soon. The hybrid reportedly will be run by the same powertrain used in the Jetta hybrid -- a 150-hp electric motor paired with 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The car’s battery pack has an electric-only range of between 30 and 35 miles. The system is reportedly similar to the Jetta hybrid setup, with the addition of a plug for recharging and a larger-capacity battery.

A VW executive said the plug-in hybrid powertrain will be installed in a “mass segment” vehicle. The plug-in hybrid may become a variant of the Jetta hybrid, the Passat or the Beetle, reports say. [source: CarandDriver]
