To lead car chassis development starting January 1 at the Volkswagen Group is electric drivetrain expert Stefan Gies, a former Ford Motor Co. and Audi AG executive. He will take over the post of Karl Horst Fuhrmann who is retiring. Since 2007, 46-year-old Gies has headed the automotive engineering institute at Aachen University in Germany. He was particularly focused on electromobility research. From 1994 to 2000, Gies headed vehicle dynamics at Ford Germany AG. He then transferred to the chassis department at Audi AG, where he handled vehicle dynamics, ride comfort and the type approval of steering systems, suspension systems, wheels and tires. Taking over Gies’s post at Aachen University is BMW manager Lutz Eckstein, who has been responsible for display and control concept and ergonomics for the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands since 2005. Before joining BMW, Eckstein functioned as manager in Mercedes-Benz’s passenger car development division.
