Volkswagen's plant in Puebla, Mexico, will begin assembly of a new compact car initially named as the New Compact Sedan, next year. For this program, Volkswagen will invest about $1 billion, $400 million of which will be for a new assembly line at the plant. Currently, the facility produces Jetta and New Beetle models. In 2008, 450,000 units were produced, 80% of which were exported. It can be recalled that last year, Volkswagen announced a $1 billion investment in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to start production of a mid-size sedan for the North American market. The Chattanooga assembly plant, which has a capacity of 150,000 vehicles, is scheduled to open in 2011.
