Volkswagen is all set to unveil its Beetle TDI Clean Diesel model at the upcoming Chicago Auto Show. The TDI, the only compact coupe that offers the Clean Diesel technology, offers a fuel economy of 29 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. The Beetle TDI Clean Diesel comes in three trim lines: 1) TDI; 2) TDI with Sunroof; and 3) TDI with Sunroof, Sound, and Navigation. All three trim lines are equipped with standard features like power windows with one-touch up/down and cruise control. All lines also feature V-Tex Leatherette seating; the kaeferfach secondary glovebox; and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Beetle TDI Clean Diesel also comes with Bluetooth technology, Keyless entry with push-button start; a Media Device Interface with iPod cable, and three auxiliary gauges.
The TDI is VW’s latest addition to its Beetle family, next to the Beetle 2.5L and Turbo. The main difference, however, between the TDI and other Beetles is the machine that powers the former. The TDI is blessed with a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection Clean Diesel engine with 140 hp of output and 236 lbs/ft of torque. The TDI is not the first Beetle to be marketed in the U.S. that comes with a diesel engine. From 1998 until 2006, VW fitted the New Beetle with a 1.9-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine.
From 2006 onwards, VW heavily modified the engine to adapt to increasing demand for improved exhaust emissions and acoustics. Some modifications include converting the fuel-injection system to a common-rail design and increasing the capacity by 72 cc by installing a 1.5-mm wider bore. The engine is connected to either a dual clutch DSG six-speed automatic transmission or a classic six-speed manual transmission. The DSG, a VW innovation, combines the user-friendly comfort of an automatic transmission with the responsiveness and economy of a manual. The six-speed DSG unit has two wet clutches with hydraulic pressure regulation. One clutch operates the 'odd' and reverse gears while the other controls the even gears. VW will announce the pricing of the Beetle TDI Clean Diesel shortly before its launch.
