If the world's most difficult rally is the Dakar Rally, then the most extraordinary event is the Baja 1000 in Mexico. The Baja is an uninterrupted 630 miles (just a little over 1,000 kilometers), continuously running against the clock, on the most vicious landscape. There are only a few rules. The participants can be anything from production VW Beetle to the 800 hp Trophy Truck in the Unlimited Class, and all kinds of two- and quad-wheeled vehicles. Volkswagen will compete in the Baja on November 21 2008 for the very first time with a uniquely designed Baja Touareg TDI in the top class of the Trophy Trucks. Mark Miller, who is also part of VW's "Dakar" factory range, and his American countryman Ryan Arciero will alternate at the wheel of the 550 PS off-road original, an estimated 14-hour drive. "We're extending our motorsport activities in North America by a pillar in off-road sport this way," says Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director. "By contesting the Baja 1000, we're committing ourselves to yet another discipline within the circle of the world's toughest motorsport events."
