Volkswagen wants Suzuki’s success in small cars

Suzuki Alto Lapin

Reports say that a partnership with Suzuki is being contemplated by Volkswagen for the purpose of building a microcar. The plan is to market the car chiefly in Asia where a great demand for microcars exists. The Japanese carmaker Suzuki has a lot of experience and know how in the microcar segment as shown by the Japanese domination by Daihatsu. The partnership between Volkswagen and Suzuki was encouraged by the chairman of VW Ferdinand Piech with a comment he made last month at the release of the latest Polo in Sardinia. There are vehicle sizes and classes in the Asian market that's just not found in Europe. These cars make a showing only at the Tokyo auto show but they are really an interesting category. As a matter of perspective one only has to observe the developing markets like that of India´s. Tata has offered its own microcar, the Nano, on the Indian market, with versions for Europe and Amercia to follow soon. In Japan, the Suzuki 660cc, for instance, is the second highest selling brand next to Toyota in that country. [via reuters]
