Volkswagen will start production of a new super-budget car in 2015, according to its boss Martin Winterkorn during an interview with a German magazine. He said that the company is currently in development of a budget car that’s priced between €6000 and €7000. He added that there are sales of about three million cars in this segment annually in China alone. Winterkorn clarified that Volkswagen won’t be totally undertaking this new car’s development. He informed Der Speigel that the company has to use new methods. The base development will be done in Germany where its appearance and its engines will be determined. Further development will be done in China with its partner. Production will then begin in 2015. VW will be able to keep the car’s cost low by producing and partly engineering the car in a low-priced country and sourcing the parts and materials locally. It’s probable that the new budget car will use current Volkswagen technology to keep costs to a minimum. Previously, VW technical chief Ulrich Hackenberg has confirmed that the car will later be offered in various body styles. This car will be sold under a new brand name that has yet to be confirmed. Presently, Volkswagen is concentrating on building the first sample of the super-budget car for China, where it will be produced too. Hackenberg informed Autocar that the car won’t have a cheap appearance. He also assured that the car wasn’t designed only to fulfill the need for mobility. He added that this car has to offer “good styling” and the owner has to be able to improve the specification over time.t
