Volvo C30 Plug-In Hybrid might be produced in Shanghai, report says

In 2013, a vehicle project will be launched by Volvo in Jiading District, Shanghai. At the Eighth China automotive industry Forum, Rong Wenwei, general manger of Shanghai International Auto City Development Co., Ltd. said that the Volvo C30 plug-in hybrid will probably be mass-produced if the plan goes smoothly. At the 2010 North American Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year, Volvo unveiled the all-electric Volvo C30 – a major milestone for its "DRIVe Towards Zero" strategy. Powering the electric C30 is a Lithium-Ion battery pack that can be recharged with either a standard household outlet or a special high capacity roadside charging station.
With the batteries topped off, the Electric C30 can accelerate from a standstill to 60mph in 11 seconds while the BEV's top speed is about 81mph. In an interview with 163.com, Lennart Stegland, director of Volvo Cars Special Vehicles, said that after the electric C30 passes its test run in 2011, it will be officially put into mass production. Lennart Stegland is highly optimistic about the new energy vehicles, which he thinks should be promoted first in cities where there is a huge demand and where there are sound policies that could support sustainable growth.
Shanghai fits the criteria. According to the city's deputy mayor Ai Baojun, a new energy vehicle and key component industry base will be built in the Jiading District. By 2015, the base will be able to carry out application and demonstration of 30,000 new energy vehicles. Volvo also revealed that by 2012, a total of 20,000 new energy passenger vehicles will be launched to the market.
