Volvo planning to take on Bmw 1-Series and X1 with two new models

It appears that Volvo is planning to expand its lineup and is considering the addition of two models: a rival to the Bmw 1-Series by also on the X1 compact crossover. The new sedan will be placed below the S40, according to Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. Furthermore, the S40 will be phased out in the next two years due to the fact that it is too close in size to the 2011 S60 sedan.
The new small crossover is expected to fill the gap when Volvo will discontinue the station wagons in the United States. The V70 will no longer be sold here after the 2011 model year, while the V50 wagon will be axed from the Volvo lineup when within two years when the S40 will be axed.
Also, Volvo is planning larger vehicles. The S80 sedan and XC90 crossover will receive their own platforms when the models will be revamped in the next two years. "We need to do something about each of those new products," Speck said. "The large S80 sedan segment is very big in China, and that range of sedan is even more critical for all the luxury brands than it has been five years ago." [via autonews - sub. required]
