Volvo prepares for the next-generation of the S60

The current Volvo S60 will shortly be phased out and production will cease in preparation for the brand new model that is set for 2010. The production at the carmaker's plant in Ghent, Belgium, will halt this April, to mark the end of an 8-year production run that produced no less than 580,000 units. Although the model did not receive much acclaim, it still stayed as one of the chief Volvo cars which helped make a new image for the carmaker from one of the most boring brands to one with a bit of European elegance and one-of-a-kind design. The high-performing S60 R comes to mind. Although it was not a rival to the M5, it still came with some amazing highlights which can level with many of the performance saloon currently on sale. Included in the special features are interlocking chassis, AWD and a 300 hp (225kW) turbocharged unit. The sale of the S60 came out strong when it was offered in 2000 and remained so until mid-2004 when interest started to fall. Following the decline, no matter how extensive modifications were applied to it in 2005 and upgrades in 2006, they could not save the S60 from going into oblivion. The good news is that Volvo intends to revive the brand in 2010 and if it has the looks of the S60 concept shown at the Detroit Motor Show last year, then enthusiasts are in for a surprise indeed. The concept model previewed the next generation powerplant design that should be seen in the new S60 next year. Power under the hood was provided by a small 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gasoline unit generating 180hp (134kW) on tap and a 47mpg (5.0-liter/100km) fuel-economy rating.
