To deliver on its claim of producing the best-handling saloon it has ever made, Volvo has re-engineered the Ford Mondeo/Volvo S80 platform that underpins the new S60. While the S80‚ Control Bladerear suspension is unchanged, it is now made of aluminum.
The reduced weight allows for better ride and handling. Product boss Hans Nilsson said that while the structure is the same, it‚ actually ‚Äúmuch lighter.‚Äù Stiffer steel is used on the S60's new steering column to have more precision with the steering. The S60 is equipped with bushings that are stiffer than the S80/Mondeo. To resist cornering forces better, the S60‚ front struts were also redesigned. A switch to alloy brake calipers was also made that reduced unsprung weight, leading to dynamic improvements.
