EuroNCAP has introduced a new appraisal procedure for assessing the level of whiplash protection provided by passenger vehicles in rear-end collisions. One of the few models that received the highest ranking is the Volvo XC60. The test for whiplash protection provided by cars is being done for the first time by EuroNCAP. The initial tests involved about twenty-five cars. The XC60, with Volvo's exceptional Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), was one of five cars to get the highest rating. An assortment of varying tests is included in the evaluation process. First, the geometry of the seat is measured, for instance, the head restraint position, in order to determine the sufficiency of protection against injuries during an impact. After that, there are three tests done in a testing rig, with different degrees of impact severity. This rig is employed to replicate a situation in which a car at a standstill is subjected to a rear-end collision. Finally, the results are assessed and the car is given its corresponding score of poor, marginal and good as represented by the colors red, orange and green, respectively.
