A chief engineer for Volkswagen has revealed that a mid-engined BlueSport Roadster, aimed to compete with machines in the class of Mazda MX-5 and the Lotus Elise and assembled from a combination of customized and production parts, is just three years away from production. The production components come from Volkswagen's latest transverse, front-engined MQB platform which is due in 2012. The parts will only be available by then and the BlueSport has to wait, although it is currently in the production-ready stage. The BlueSport weighs 1200kg and to cut down on weight, employs a manual, unlined hood. To further add to the vehicle's production credentials the project was pushed and styling was finalized by VW boss Martin Winterkorn and the head of Research and Development Ulrich Hackenberg. Having rarely been seen within VW up until now, the next step for the vehicle is to convince other VW engineers that the car is viable.
