There’s a possibility that Volkswagen will build a four-wheel drive Polo as a tie-in with its participation in the World Rally Championship. Very recently, the VW Polo R WRC was introduced. This is a 151mph front-wheel drive supermini. Because this car appeared so soon after the launch of VW’s three-year WRC program, rumors came out that there will be more rally spin-offs to come. According to R&D head Ulrich Hackenberg, VW aimed to use rallying to form an ‘emotional link’ with its customers. He added that there may be some customer interest and that several countries would want a four-wheel drive model. He said that for now, there are no concrete plans but then he said that this is a project that he could “imagine.” The PQ25 platform that the Polo is built on has already been used by the all-wheel drive Audi A1 quattro.
