In order to get ahead of Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG will soon build a fifth plant in China, according to a Chinese newspaper, the 21st Century Business Herald. Its report stated that VW and local partner FAW would construct a manufacturing site in Guangzhou, a southern port city in the industrial heart of China and close to Hong Kong. The new facility is expected to build a minimum of 200,000 units each year initially.
It also marks the first entry of VW's Spanish brand Seat to China. The four plants that Volkswagen and FAW Group operate are located in the cities of Shanghai, Nanjing, Changchun and Chengdu. These plants produce the Jetta, Bora, Golf, Sagitar and Audi models among others. The automaker also has a joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp. producing Passat, Santana, Polo and Skoda models.
