Smaller and more powerful powerplants like the latest 1.2-liter TSI and 1.6-liter TDI units continue to come out of Volkswagen’s production line. The carmaker plans to include the two powerplant options in the latest Golf and Polo. The 1.2-liter turbocharged and direct injection inline-four unit is the most current addition to the TSI engine range.

Although it comes with a small footprint, the 1.2-liter unit generates 104hp and 129ft-lb of torque at 1500rpm. Reduction of both friction and weight has attained such efficiency. The powerplant unit comes with an aluminum crank case and a well-developed combustion process. The benefits of this have already been reaped by VW in the 1.4-liter TSI unit which gained the title Engine of the Year for three succeeding years now. The 1.6-liter TDI diesel unit will be fulfilling the role of the new entry-level powerplant for both the Polo and Golf models. It will come in a variety of power outputs beginning with a 74hp version for the Polo. The carmaker will also offer the 1.6-liter unit in 89hp and 104hp variants. For reason of its modular design structure, the engine will server as the pattern for all the future 4-cylinder diesel units of VW. The powerplant were shown in last week’s 30th Vienna Engine Symposium. Although the engines is yet to be confirmed for sale in the US, they will be offered for the new Golf and Polo in Europe later in the year.
