Vw Golf R20: the answer to Ford Focus RS
Eager to join the power war, Volkswagen hits back at Ford’s Focus RS with its own Golf R20. It has been commented that the Golf GTI has been left behind with just 207bhp. The Golf R20 makes up for that lapse with a modified version of the last Golf GTI’s EA113 2.0-litre with direct injection that will give it over 260bhp and effectively replacing the six-cylinder R32.
Unlike the front-drive Scirocco R, the range-topping Golf will have four-wheel drive. It accelerates from 0-60mph in less than six seconds and hits an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. The new R20 has aggressive styling features, and these photos clearly show the extended side sills and gaping intakes in the front bumper. The lower section of the nose will be very similar to the Scirocco R’s, which also shares the engine and mechanicals. Twin exhausts at the rear ape the look of the R32 and the bumper is extended. Lowered suspension, different dampers and new springs will help the R20’s handling, along with a reworked version of Volkswagen’s Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC). The car will be displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
