Having gained the honor of being the World Car of the Year for 2009, the German made VW Golf is on a roll this year and comes back and turn into the best selling car in Europe, ahead of the Peugeot 207 and Ford Fiesta. Although the Golf has recorded an increase in sales, its position is under threat by Ford Fiesta, however, which recently released records pointing to an increase of sales in April by 27 percent and a year-to-date increase of 20 percent. JATO Dynamics, the group that obtained the data, show that VW Golf sold a total of 44,612 units in April (a 7.2 percent year on year fall), although year-to-date- show that it has sold 169,089 cars, a 4 percent fall from 2008 covering the same period. Two other cars in the top ten succeeded in recording increased sales. One of these is the Fiat Panda which went up by 17 percent and VW Polo which only increased by 1 percent. JATO says that the scrappage scheme of the national government is beginning to have an impact on both the volume and kind of cars being sold. Across the European market, the trend shows a drop in sales of new cars. Photo gallery after the jump!
