Europe's top selling vehicle still is Volkswagen's new sixth-generation Golf. In September, 59,552 units were sold, a 56% increase compared to the figure for the same period last year. Of course, making a large contribution to this sales increase are the pan-European scrappage schemes and the introduction of a new model the past year. Coming in second is the Ford Fiesta, which sold 51,291 units. Third place goes to the Vauxhall/Opel Corsa, which sold 38,947 units. The analysts at JATO Dynamics, who released these numbers, warn that the sharp rise in sales seen in the past few months is likely to be unsustainable when scrappage schemes are removed. David Di Girolamo, head of JATO Consult, said that the market continues to be driven by small cars and new models, which were the popular choices in national scrappage schemes. The government incentive programs are said to have unnaturally affected the markets and this has many sectors anxious.. The analysts vow that from now on, they will more closely monitor the market to see if the recovery is sustainable.
