Volkswagen Group’s subsidiaries -- Skoda and Seat – have been performing well and at a level that CEO Martin Winterkorn is satisfied with. He said that Skoda could sell 1.5 million cars in 2018 – a marked increase from 762,600 units last year. Winterkorn told Automotive News Europe that Skoda is “one of the world’s fastest growing automotive brands.” Skoda revealed just how successful its multiple brand strategy is. Skoda models are known for being affordable, technologically solid cars that are an ideal fit to the times. Skoda is continuing to work to position itself so that its customers in China, Russia, India and Europe will get the “right products from Skoda.”

Winterkorn also said that the restructuring of VW Group’s struggling Spanish brand, Seat, is on track. He said that Seat is headed into the “right direction in numerous ways,” since its sales are increasing, more new models will be released soon, and it has entered the Chinese market.

He also denied rumors that a motorcycle brand will be added to Seat’s lineup. He shared that the production plans for the ultra-fuel-efficient XL1 two-seater are ongoing. He added that small series production will start in Germany by 2013. According to insiders, this car will be built in either Dresden or Wolfsburg. [source: Autonews]
