The Association of the Slovak Automotive Industry said that production will likely be increased by 12% at the Slovak factories of Volkswagen, PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Kia as overseas demand has recovered. Last Wednesday, the industry association said that the car companies will build a record high of 630,000 vehicles this year, compared with 561,993 units sold in 2010.

PSA and Volkswagen have revealed its expansion plans in the eastern European country, which is ideal due to its euro-area membership and with its labor costs being lower than in the West. At the Bratislava plant is where VW produces the Polo subcompact, the Audi Q7, the VW Touareg, and the Porsche Cayenne SUVs.

PSA makes the Peugeot 207 and Citroen C3 Picasso subcompacts models in its Trnava facility. Meanwhile, Kia's Cee'd compact car and Sportage and Hyundai ix35 SUVs are built in its Zilina facility. Slovakia became a regional hub for the auto industry in the previous decade. About 37% of total industrial sales in 2010 were linked to the automotive industry.
