VW names Jonathan Browning as new US chief

2011 VW Jetta

Jonathan Browning has been appointed as the CEO of Volkswagen AG’s US unit, which was left without a leader since about two months ago when Stefan Jacoby transferred to Volvo. Browning’s appointment takes effect on October 1. Browning, who worked for General Motors and Ford Motor before joining VW in June, is set to become VW of America's fourth chief since 2005. VW announced this development at a press conference in Washington. Browning is tasked to improve the coordination of VW’s international sales companies.

At GM, he had served as the vice president of global sales, service and marketing. Among Browning’s new responsibilities is overseeing the final phase of the introduction of a new Jetta compact, VW's topselling model in the US.

In line with this project, VW will be opening a factory in Tennessee and will soon debut its first car made exclusively for the US market. Browning will take on the challenge of contributing to surpass Toyota Motor Corp. in terms of size and profitability by 2018.

With the current trend, Volkswagen is heading towards its eighth annual loss in the US. VW has set a goal to nearly triple its share of the US market to 6% by 2018 and increase deliveries to 1 million (including Audi).
