Vw Rabbit and GTI making U.S. debut in Sempember 2009

The United States will, by September of 2009, become the recipient of the VW’s sixth-generation Golf (Rabbit) and the more performance centered GT, with manufacturing set to begin for the American-spec cars during the later part of June.

The latest Golf is anticipated to cost a little more than the retiring model, with a $250 increase in price scheduled to apply to the base level Golf and GTI variants. The enhancements consist of a fresh engine lineup and amplified availability of DSG dual-clutch transmission technologies, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 28% in some versions. In spite of the present economic downturn and anxieties concerning the unstable fuel costs, Volkswagen is keen to bring the GTI hot-hatch to the US and is calculating that ti will bring in more than 30% of Golf sales. Edmunds reports that of 42,000 fifth gen Golfs sold in the US last year, 15,000 were the high-performance GTI version.

Four versions of efficient petrol engines will be available for introduction. In Europe, they consist of yields of 80hp (60kW), 100hp (75kW), 122hp (90kW) and 160hp (118kW). The latter two engines employ VW’s TSI design with both a turbo and supercharger on board. Fuel efficiency for the base engine is measured at 36.75mpg (6.4L/100km), whereas the more potent 1.4L TSI engine generating 160hp is logged at a more economical 37.33mpg (6.3L/100km).
