Vw Scirocco GT24-CNG to make its debut at the 24-Hour Race from Nurburgring
It is reported that Volkswagen will be bringing in two Scirocco cars with groundbreaking natural gas powerplant at the 24-Hour Race this coming May 23 and 24 at the Nurburgring.
After the carmaker came out victorious at the Dakar Rally last January, which it won as the first carmaker utilizing diesel technology in the race, and now the carmaker is taking on another technical challenge: the employment of EcoFuel powerplants in a 24-hour endurance test in the most demanding race tack in the world. The twin Scirocco GT24-CNG comes with 2.0 liter powerplants energized by natural gas to deliver almost 300hp. Besides these, the team will also bring in three more Scirocco GT24 units that will come with 2.0 liter turbo gasoline units in the classic endurance race called the “Green Hell” to be held in Western Germany in the Eifel region. More details and photos after the jump!
The German carmaker VW won a one-two victory last year in the 2.0 liter turbo class even before the release of the Scirocco to the market. VW is using the 24-Hour Race as the arena upon which to showcase their capabilities and expertise and the Scirocco GT24 has truly demonstrated these by winning the race in its class when it was introduced last year.
This year VW is taking another step forward again by employing two varying powerplant concepts. The carmaker wants to show that it provides different powertrain concepts which standout in the area of high efficiency, dynamics and reliability. And for this purpose VW found its ideal test bed in the Nordschleife and the 24-Hour Race.
