Vw Scirocco R breaks cover

Volkswagen Scirocco RVW is coming out with its latest high-performance VW Scirocco coupe, a vehicle that has been officially exempted from sale in the US. The first sign that something like this was coming was when VW introduced the GT24-CNG race car and the Scirocco Studie R concept at the Bologna Motor Show. The latest performance version, dubbed the Scirocco R (not the Scirocco R20T - all the websites were speaking, but the readers of 4wheelsnews knew that, as we reported in this post) will be making its introduction together with a similar Golf-based variant at the Nurburgring 24 hour endurance competition this weekend. More details and photos after the jump! The main elements carried from the previous concepts consist of the aggressively styled bumper with bigger intakes and special running lights, together with a bit wider fenders and ride height closer to the ground. Performance numbers of the Scirocco R include a power output of 265hp (198kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) and equipped with a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch DSG which as an option. These are enough to help the car accelerate from standstill to 62mph (100km/h) in under six seconds and reach a maximum speed of 155mph (250km/h) which is electronically limited. Its 2.0-liter TFSI unit is the same one that the Audi S3 is equipped with. The carmaker has stuck to an FWD configuration although handling will be assisted by the addition of the new XDS electronic differential by VW. Inbuilt in the stability system of the electronic limited-slip differential (EDS) is its extension, the XDS electronic transverse differential lock. The system works during cornering in this manner: as soon as the onboard electronics detects that the wheel within the inside of the curve on the front axle begins to slip, the stability system hydraulics kicks in and builds up braking pressure at this specific wheel to help it regain traction. Acting as a kind of transverse differential lock, the XDS compensates for the understeering that is characteristic of vehicles with FWD during high speed cornering. Initial sales are set for September after its world introduction in the same month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
