Car production in India, Asia's third-largest automotive market, has slowed because of the shortage in the supply of batteries, engine castings and other parts. Volkswagen, Suzuki Motor Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co. have announced waiting lists for some models because of this problem. In many cases, customers have been kept waiting for as long as three months but with still no assurances from the carmakers on when they should expect it. Because local component suppliers failed to anticipate that Indian car sales will increase by over 30% this year, Tata Motors Ltd. was forced to import tires from China. Pawan Goenka, head of the Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers and president at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., the nation's largest SUV maker, said that the problems won´t be resolved at least for the next three to four months. Goenka said that due to the parts shortage, Mahindra produced 12% fewer vehicles than it aimed for in the quarter ended June. The waiting lists of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the country's largest carmaker, for its Swift and Dzire models are as long as a month.
