Vw to establish a new car manufacturing unit at a Karmann factory

2010 Vw SciroccoVolkswagen AG is set to purchase the Karmann factory in Germany and will set up a new car manufacturing unit there that will begin production in 2011. VW will buy the land, machinery and equipment formerly belonging to the Karmann holding company in Osnabrueck in VW's home state of Lower Saxony. VW expects to create more than 1,000 jobs by 2014. Last April 8, Karmann filed for bankruptcy protection after demand dwindled. The coachbuilder and convertible rooftop specialist is known for producing the VW Beetle-based coupe dubbed the Karmann Ghia. In a statement, VW said that it will utilize the extensive experience of the employees and former employees of Karmann who were involved in the production of small series models. [via autonews]
