Amid much speculation, Volkswagen AG is said to take a stake in Japan's Suzuki Motor Co. by the end of 2009, according to Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche, which cited an Suzuki executive. According to the executive, who remains unnamed, a basic agreement will be entered this year. It is widely believed that no company will lose in this transaction. Suzuki would gain access to VW's technology, while VW would have a solid supporting leg in India and Southeast Asia. No confirmation has been given by both parties however. Previously, there have been reports that VW would be interested in a partnership with Suzuki and that in fact, talks were ongoing. The most that VW's CEO Martin Winterkorn would say is that the product portfolio of Suzuki would fit well with that of VW. He declined to comment further.
