The German carmaker is planning an electric Up! minicar project, although the first copies will arrive in 2013. At present though the up! is still being developed with the standard gasoline and diesel engine choices and will be offered under different guises via the VW, Seat and Skoda brand names in two years‚Äô time. The arrival of the electric up! in 2013 will be later than some of its rivals like the i-MiEV of Mitsubishi which is set to be launched by 2011. This delay could be compensated by either better price tags or a far superior product or even both. The 2007 up! blue plug-in hybrid concept car is VW‚ preview of the electric minicar. In the advanced concept form, the car comes with hydrogen fuel cell coupled with an electric powerhouse and lithium-ion battery pack. When powered exclusively on electric the 60hp (45kW) electric unit helps the car hit a 65 mile range. There is a possibility that the production version of the car will come with an electric unit as its only source of power. Photo gallery after the jump!
