In order to triple its sales in the United States in the next seven years, it appears that Volkswagen will expand its portfolio of sport-utility vehicles to gain ground on Toyota and GM. Volkswagen has currently two SUV models on the United States market: the Touareg and compact Tiguan. Through 2010, Volkswagen sold 20,946 Tiguans in the U.S. and and 4,713 Touaregs. Still, it appears that the most popular SUV model in the United States in 2010 was the Honda CR-V, generating sales of 203,714 units.
Apparently, the poor sales showed by the two German SUV models are related to the fact that the models are not being recognized as sufficiently competitive, according to Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch- Gladbach, Germany.
Braztel also added that the German manufacturer is simply not a player in the American SUV market. “We will be looking to really grow, particularly in the compact SUV segment,” VW's U.S. chief Jonathan Browning said. Volkswagen aims to become world’s largest manufacturer by 2018 and triple its sales in the United States by 1 million vehicles. [via autonews - sub. required]
