Vw’s city car coming earlier than we expected

Volkswagen is accelerating the development of a cost effective latest two-seater city vehicle. In its most frugal form, the new Vw will bring back a segment-leading 141mpg and a lowered emission of less than 60g/km of CO2 and, take note, all without hybrid drive. The three-door hatchback is scheduled to compete with the Smart and Toyota iQ. It is stoutly hinted by insiders at Vw that this new vehicle will be named Chico in keeping with a Vw concept car way back in '91, and will be the entry level Vw , below the Up! The projected cost could go as little as €7,100 ($9,195) when it becomes available for sale in 2011 in the UK. The latest Vw will be pattered on a revised variant of the framework from the Up! The car has a somewhat low roofline and narrow track intended at giving it a class-leading sleek design.
Martin Winterkorn, Vw chairman, says this is essential to attaining the fuel consumption and emission targets aimed for the car: "The Up! has a tall design and as a result there are limits to its overall aerodynamic performance," said Winterkorn. "Our newest car is a good deal lower and because of this it carries a lot less drag." In the interior, there is enough room for two adults and a restricted number of luggage in an arrangement just like the Smart city vehicle. The latest Volkswagen will employ a current 1.2-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine with a cylinder shutdown feature that permits it to run on just two cylinders.
It will be accompanied by a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder common-rail diesel, which will be presented in the new Polo next year. Stop-start technology, low rolling resistance rubber, and regenerative braking will be some of the typical highlights of the car. Vw had foreseen a new series of 2-cylinder motors for the city car but discovered that they demanded relatively high revs in the primary drive-off stage, canceling any gain in fuel consumption and emissions in contrast to the bigger units.Volkswagen is also seeking an electric variant utilizing Toshiba battery technology. This contender to the Smart ED is still being developed at a new electric vehicle development center started by Volkswagen in Isenbuettel in Germany near Wolfsburg.
