Vw’s next roadster to debut in January at Detroit Auto Show

Volkswagen is allegedly working on a reasonably priced mid-engine sports car which it plans to make public sometime early in the next decade. A concept model of the vehicle was initially scheduled for debut at this month‚ Los Angeles Auto Show, however a company insider has lately revealed that the concept‚ released has been delayed to the Detroit Auto Show in January of 2009. The insider also informed Automotive News Europe that VW plans to open the production version in 2011 as a halo version for the brand, and that it would be on top of an improved version of the Audi R8 platform. This newest morsel of information contradicts prior reports that implied that the new version would be positioned as a less expensive roadster designed in the level of the Toyota MR2 and Porsche Boxster. Former VW roadster concepts that were never given the go for production consists of 2003‚ Concept R, a high-end roadster created by the company‚ former design guru Peter Schreyer, as well as 2005's Eco Racer study, both envisage during the tenure of former VW board chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder, whose dream of a mid-engine sports car at VW may finally become a reality.
