Watermelons: the car fuel of the future?

WatermelonScientists have suggested making use of 360,000 tons of watermelon left to rot each year by turning them into ethanol, dubbed as the car fuel of the future. Due to their unusual shape or size, 20-40% of watermelons are left on the ground by farmers. Scientists at the US Department of Agriculture in Oklahoma have discovered a way to create ethanol from watermelons. They say that the juice in these wasted watermelons can produce about 2.5 million liters of ethanol every year. To put it in perspective, this amount is actually a very small percentage of the predicted total annual ethanol production of nine billion liters however, these watermelons can significantly cut the amount of nitrogen and water required to produce the fuel.
