What’s under Porsche Panamera’s skin

With a final curb weight of just 1,770kg, the Porsche Panamera S will be lighter than a Maserati Quattroporte or Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG. This was attained via the use of lightweight materials like aluminum and magnesium wherever possible, such as magnesium door tops. Aerodynamic information of the Panamera has also been made available by Porsche. The drag coefficient of the S is 0.29 which is enhanced by a flat underbody that combats lift. The highlight of the car though is a revolutionary new rear air spoiler that rises from below the window at the rear.
It comes with a motorized arm that extends over the rear wheel arches which consequently improves downforce. The S and 4S come with a standard 4.8-liter V8 unit which can generate 394 hp at 6500rpm and 369lb-ft at 3500rpm. Although the turbo is propelled by the same powerplant but it can generate 493 hp at 6000rpm and 516lb-ft of torque at just 2250rpm.
The overall weight of the car is bumped to 1970kg. Acceleration rate for the Panamera is 0-62mph times at 5.6 seconds for the S, 5.0 seconds for the 4S and 4.2 seconds for the Turbo. The Turbo can reach 100 mph from standstill in 9.0 seconds and attain a maximum speed of 188mph. The fuel economy of the Turbo is said to be better than that of the manual S at 23.3mpg against 22.6mpg. The best among the three is the 4S with fuel consumption of 25.5mpg. By 2010, a supercharged V6 motor will be added to the range with diesel and hybrid variants of the Panamera are currently being developed and unlikely to be available by 2011.
