Opel's workers at the Antwerp, Belgium plant are protesting the impending closure of the assembly plant by blocking access to part of the plant. Late Wednesday, unions blocked the entrance to the site where new cars were parked. The closure will lead to the loss of the jobs of 2,300 employees. Despite labor union conflict that's likely to arise, Opel CEO Nick Reilly is reportedly forging ahead with the closure of the factory. Opel's parent, General Motors Co., had sent out warnings the past weeks about the plant's closure as the European unit proceeds to cut 8,300 jobs and cut capacity in Europe by a fifth. According to an official at Belgium's ACV union, Opel Antwerp has set an extraordinary meeting of its work council on Thursday morning. The European management of Opel had also planned a meeting in Brussels shortly before that meeting. Opel unions continue to hope for a restructuring plan to be finalized before the month ends.
