“World Green Car of the Year” nominees announced

Mercedes-Benz E300 BluetecThe sub-award of the yearly World Car of the Year (WCOTY), the World Green Car of the Year award, is given out by a devoted organization and selected by a group of journalist judges from all over the world. Started with the award of the Honda Civic Hybrid in 2006, the cars qualified for the 2009 Green WCOTY award have been named of late. Barely a month ago at the LA Auto Show, the Green Car of the Year of Green Car Journal was voted, with the Volkswagen Jetta TDI garnering the award, the very first time a diesel has pinched the honor from a hybrid. There have already been two diesel winners of the Green WCOTY award: the Mercedes-Benz E320 BlueTec and the BMW 118d with EfficientDynamics succeeding in 2007 and 2008, in that order. More details after the jump! Included in this year's list are a wide range of production and experimental vehicles, as well as everything from 'TetraFuel' cars to full electrics. Since the guidelines say that production vehicles must be all-new and offered for sale between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2008, to qualify, there are some strange omissions (for example, the Toyota Prius and VW Jetta TDI) while some other nonconformists, such as the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon Hybrid, succeeded to the list. It is of significance that there are a number of Volvo cars on the list, five in all, more than double the number of all other brands. [source]
