Sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrids worldwide have topped 2 million units. It was in 1997 that the first generation Prius went on sale in Japan. Since then, more than 2.01 millions have been sold, 200,000 of which went to customers in Europe. Currently, Toyota has 13 hybrid models available for sale in 50 countries and regions throughout the globe. All the more impressive is Toyota's claim that since it sold its first hybrid, it has meant that 11 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions were released into the atmosphere. Toyota based this calculation on the emissions of petrol-powered vehicles with comparable size and performance. In the UK, the first Toyota hybrid sold was the Prius in 2000. Since then, 30,000 units have been sold, including 3,000 of the newly launched third-generation model. Starting in mid-2010, the latest Toyota hybrid, the Auris, will be built in the UK. Toyota aims to have a hybrid version of every model by 2020.
