Zipcar has now a competitor: introducing Connect by Hertz

Hertz, well-known vehicle rental office, has just inaugurated a fresh service called Connect, and it's a lot like the service given by eight-year-old Zipcar. Connect clients will pay a yearly fee that permits them to rent vehicles on a per hour basis, an arrangement quite identical to the one offered by Zipcar. Members make reservations online and then utilize swipe cards to access vehicles that are parked at lots throughout the city. Somewhat unsurprisingly, stylish city cars such as the Toyota Prius and MINI Cooper are part of the program. The essential difference between the two programs is that where Zipcar has about 5,500 cars in 13 cities, Hertz has 40,000 and all are in New York. Right now, Connect by Hertz is offered in New York, Paris and London, including Park Ridge, New Jersey, quarters of the Hertz Corporation. The intention is to add 20 more local cities and an equal number of foreign ones beginning 2009.
