BMW to sell 20 Individual Editions of ActiveHybrid 7 in Japan

BMW is releasing a very limited edition of the ActiveHybrid 7, which is regarded as the least popular version of the 7 Series range. BMW will only manufacture 20 examples of the so-called ‘Individual Edition’ and will sell them only in Japan at a starting price of JPY13.1 million.

Actually, this limited edition is not really that special, since all the options available on the Individual Edition could also be purchased, albeit separately, for any BMW 7 Series vehicle. The Individual Edition ActiveHybrid 7 units could only be availed in either Mineral White or Citrine Black, although all of them will be fitted with 20-inch alloys.

Moving to the inside, customers have limited options as well. For instance, customers could choose from just two shades -- Caramel or Platinum – for the two full Merino leather interiors. Customers could also choose from just two templates -- walnut satin wood or piano black trims -- for the dash and door panels.

2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is now powered by 3-liter TwinPower Turbo

The latest of BMW’s intelligent hybrid drive systems – the second generation of the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 – is getting updated for the 2013 model year. Now with lower fuel consumption and emissions, the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is powered by a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine, replacing the V8 engine found in the first generation.

Complementing this power plant are a 55hp synchronous electric motor, hybrid-spec 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, a lithium ion high-performance battery and power electronics. With these components, BMW was able to turn the new BMW ActiveHybrid 7 into a vehicle with an excellent balance of performance and efficiency.

The new BMW ActiveHybrid 7 can churn out a combined output of 349 hp and peak torque of 367 lb-ft, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. Likewise, the second generation is more fuel efficient. In fact, in the European Union test cycle, the new ActiveHybrid 7 returns efficiency gains of 14 percent over the new 740Li.

BMW has released the U.S specification price list for the 2013 ActiveHybrid 7 model, which has a starting price of $84,895. The luxury hybrid features a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder, twin-scroll turbocharged engine and a 40-kW electric motor. 348 hp (260 kW / 354 PS) and 367 lb-ft (497 Nm) of torque.

The hybrid power train could deliver up to 348 hp (260 kW / 354 PS) and 367 lb-ft (497 Nm) of torque, enabling the car to go from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, while in electric mode it can only go as quickly as 37 miles (60 km/h). The other model uses the same drivetrain with the company's ActiveHybrid lineup, which includes the 3-Series and 5-Series models. So far, it is similar to its counterparts that are actually smaller. It is powered by the same eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new model year ushers in a proper full hybrid as it's now able to run only on electric power (up to 2.5 miles), unlike the 2012MY. Unlike the outgoing model, the power unit of the new one will be turned off when the ActiveHybrid 7 is at a full stop, making use of its electric motor to transform the vehicle's kinectic energy into electrical energy in the battery.

BMW’s all-new ActiveHybrid 3 model has finally been unveiled. It is equipped with a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six partnered to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. It is combined with an electric motor to produce 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. This is the same powerplant used on the 335i, which has been named as the international “Engine of the Year” award for two straight years.

On the other hand, the electric motor has a maximum output of 55-hp. It can power the sedan on pure electric power to as high as 45-mph and it can reach distances up to 2.5 miles (when driving at 20-mph on average). Similar to all electric models, it creates a max torque of 155 lb-ft of torque from a standing start.

The electric motor features a lithium-ion high-voltage battery created just for the hybrid 3-Series model, covered in a very strong housing positioned between the wheel arches in the trunk.

BMW 3-series hybrid that’s set to be launched next month has a starting price of £40,225 on-the-road. The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will be available in SE, Modern, Luxury and M Sport specification. It is powered by the TwinPower 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine and 55bhp electric motor that are also used on the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, with an output of 340bhp and 332lb ft.

It can sprint from zero to 62mph in 5.3sec, which makes it 0.6sec faster than the 5-series. Its CO2 emissions level of 139g/km undercuts the bigger car by 10g/km. BMW asserts that on electric power alone, it can be driven up to 2.4 miles and could return 47.9mpg on the combined cycle. It achieves an 18% benefit-in-kind rate. It’s expected that the four-wheel drive BMW 3-series xDrive will be launched in July.

320i will feature the new chassis configuration and will have a starting price of £27,000 in SE specification. BMW claims that it can accelerate from zero to 62mph in 7.4sec with a manual gearbox. It also offers 41.5mpg and could get 159g/km. Available as an option is the eight-speed automatic gearbox, which raises fuel economy by 2mpg and 7g/km. It’s likely that BMW will reveal the diesel variants in the upcoming months.

BMW’s hybrid models are not selling well in the U.S. but that hasn’t stopped the automaker from continuing to push the upcoming hybrid 3 series. BMW has already said that the M550d, X5 M50d, or X6 M50d won’t be available in the U.S. It has also decided to remove one of its few diesel options offered in the U.S.

BMW is slowly conditioning the US market toward electric powertrains to prepare for the all electric "i" brand. This is why the 335d was eliminated in favor of a hybrid. BMW doesn’t seem to be mindful of the poor sales of its hybrid models.

It cancelled the X6 hybrid last year. Meanwhile, diesel BMW models are in high demand and its stocks run out quickly. BMW wants consumers to consider the ActiveHybrid 3, which has an N55 six cylinder aside from a 55hp electric motor.
