Acura to drop the ZDX from its portfolio after the 2013 model year

Acura ZDX crossover had only been available in the market for less than four years but it would be dropped from the brand’s portfolio after the 2013 model year. Acura had confirmed the discontinuation of the ZDX. It also announced a few minimal modifications to the controversial crossover for the 2013 model year. The ZDX was stripped of its clunky, beak-like grille. Instead, stylists gave it a more slender shape in line with what’s used on the new ILX, RDX, and revised TL sedan.

Slight revisions were made to the front and rear bumpers. The interior also gets sports new trim finish and an optional “high-contrast” color scheme. The new ZDX has an amended price/ content structure.

The 2012 model is available in three grades and has a starting price of $47,015 (including destination). Meanwhile, the 2013 ZDX is offered in just one guise and has a base price of $51,815. It is still powered by a 3.7-liter V-6, which is partnered with a six-speed automatic transmission and Acura’s signature torque-vectoring SH-AWD all-wheel-drive system.

2011 Acura ZDX priced from $46,505 in the United States

Acura has announced that the 2012 ZDX will have a starting price of $46,505, a $150 increase over the 2010 model. Acura has very high hopes for the ZDX but through the end of November, only 3006 units have been sold. The 2012 ZDXs will still use Acura’s 3.7-liter V-6 with an output of 300hp and will still be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Each ZDX will offer Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and 19-inch wheels as standard. The Technology Package ZDX is priced at $51,005 and features a navigation system that links to traffic and weather information, a keyless entry system, multi-view rear camera, and an advanced sound system.

The range-topping ZDX with the Advance Package offers high-tech features such as blind spot information system, adaptive cruise control, Collision Mitigating Braking System, perforated Milano leather, upgraded materials on the headliner, and the Integrated Dynamic System active damper system. Sales for the ZDX were slow even at the start when it was launched in December 2009 but so far, November 2010 has been ZDX’s worst sales month.

The trend of models that have new or reworked body styles has been spreading rapidly, as evidenced by the entry of minivans, followed by SUVs, crossovers, and four-door coupes.

The spotlight is now on the five-door, not-quite-a-hatchback big-rear car that BMW and Honda/Acura have embraced.

BMW has the 5-Series Gran Turismo while Honda/Acura has created the Accord Crosstour and ZDX. Infiniti and Lexus are two companies that have chosen not to produce their own representatives for this segment.

An auction was held in February 2010 for a customized, one-of-a-kind 2010 Acura ZDX four- door sports coupe for the benefit of MusiCares -- the official GRAMMY Foundation charity. The bids were submitted on eBay (www.ebay.com/grammy) through February 8, 2010. The minimum bid started at $45,000.

The vehicle was equipped with a set of Acura accessory 20-inch diameter wheels/tires. It came with custom leather seats and floor mats that have the GRAMMY logo embossed on them. Music enthusiasts particularly liked this ZDX because its interior has the signatures of the artists who were set to perform at the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala in January 2010. The all-new ZDX was developed, designed, and built in North America.

It was actually the first vehicle to have its styling done in the dedicated Acura Design Studio in Torrance, California, from start to finish. The ZDX body came with generous curves, deeply sculpted shoulders, and bold character lines. It was equipped with a new 3.7-liter VTEC V-6 that delivers 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The ZDX featured technologies that enhance the driving experience.

The 2009 Orange County Auto Show was where the all-new 2010 Acura ZDX made its auto show debut as a production model. The ZDX arrived at Acura dealerships in the winter of that year. The model came with prominent styling, exceptional performance, and some advanced technology features.

It featured striking coupe-like styling with the additional benefit of having flexibility and an imposing presence. Its design, development, and production were done entirely in North America. The dedicated Acura Design Studio in Torrance, California, did the styling of the ZDX from start to finish.

Acura stayed true to the original sketch made by Michelle Christensen, its first female designer. She designed the model to have sensuous curves, shoulders that were deeply sculpted, and solid character lines. The 2010 Acura ZDX had design features that include:

Acura has unveiled a prototype of its ZDX luxury sports coupe at the New York International Auto Show, with plans to commence sales of the production version in the fall of 2009. This four-seater sports coupe is designed to usher in a new era for Acura in terms of alluring styling, modern luxury and precise fine-tuning.

True enough, the ZDX features bold fender flares, intense curves and a sharply raked roofline that all muddle the borders between coupe, sedan and SUV. Likewise, the ZDX prototype features flowing lines that run from the headlights to the rear.

However, the ZDX prototype remains true to its coupe-inspired styling, as evidenced by the rear door handles ingeniously concealed in the C-pillar. It also features a highly functional cargo space on the rear as well as a storage room underneath the floor.
