Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now integrated to 2017 Honda Pilot

Honda has long held a strong position when it comes to the three-row SUV segment. With the new 2017 Pilot, Honda hopes that this will strengthen its position even further. The model will become available for purchase on November 7, 2016, and it will have a functionality that customers are sure to love. Specifically, it will be compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In addition, the choices for color on the interior have been increased. Installed inside is a touchscreen that’s fingerprint-resistant.

That the 2017 Pilot has this functionality should not be a surprise as Honda is the first to have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto installed to their models. This was first observed with the 2016 Civic and even the 2016 Accord. The functionality mentioned is integrated to the all-new Display Audio 8-inch touchscreen. To ensure that the risk of fingerprints appearing on the screen is minimized, the touchscreen has a new coating applied to it. This also allows the touchscreen to continue having a high glare resistance. However, the Android and Apple adaptability are only available for trims starting with Pilot EX and higher.

According to Jeff Conrad, who is the General Manager and Senior Vice-President of Honda Division, as a third generation of the Pilot, this new model has been a success with many SUV customers. For the 2017 model, the brand made sure that the Pilot would have the technology and the choices that many customers want, he added. Indeed, under the 2017 Pilot, Honda improved the customization even further by making available on all trims the black interior. White Diamond Pearl paint for the exterior will be offered as an option, something that was only made available for the Elite in the past.

As we announced it here, Google revealed today at the I/O Developer Conference the Android Auto, its brand new in-car control system developed for smartphones, to rival Apple’s CarPlay. First of all, we don’t see the new Android Auto as a rival to Apple CarPlay, but as a way to reduce the risk of accidents because you may already know, people are distracted during driving by their smartphones.

Google’s Android Auto is completely voice-enabled, which means that the driver can keep its hands on the steering wheel and his eyes on the road. Known as Google Auto Link during the development stage, the Android Auto promises to be the first product arriving from the Open Automotive Alliance a.k.a. a group led by Google that includes carmakers such as Audi, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai as well as the well-known chipmaker Nvidia.

According to Google, the Android Auto is a projected system and not an embedded operating system. This means that the smartphones using the Android operating system can be plugged into the car and the driver can access its features using the controls found on the steering wheel but also via the display screen.

Google Inc. is unveiling its first in-car operating system at its annual Google I/O conference, set for June 25 and 26 in San Francisco, three people briefed on the project told Automotive News. The system -- known internally as Google Auto Link (GAL) during development -- will be the first fruit of the Open Automotive Alliance, a group of companies that include Google, Audi AG, General Motors Co., Honda Motor Co., Hyundai Motor Group and NVIDIA Corp.

According to the source, GAL is not an embedded infotainment system, but a “projected” system that allows a user to control the Android-based smartphones through the car’s own controls and display screen.

The sources said Google will not disclose yet which model would use GAL first. During the announcement of the creation of the Open Automotive Alliance in January, the group said it would bring the Android OS to cars starting this year.

A technology that enables drivers to use iPhones with voice commands or steering-wheel buttons will be available in vehicles as early as 2014, Apple Inc. said. The company said that Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo Car Group will show the CarPlay system this week to customers, with other carmakers introducing it later.

CarPlay will be available as an update to the iOS 7 mobile software on iPhones, and works with the Siri voice-recognition feature.

Around 39 percent of car buyers consider in-vehicle technology as one of the factors in choosing a vehicle while around 14 percent cited traditional performance measures such as power and speed as their first consideration, according to a study published by consulting company Accenture in December 2013.
