Volvo mulls building a subcompact-sized vehicle that would compete against BMW's Mini and the Audi A1. But for this to be possible, Volvo needs to acquire a partner to share the costs as well as get a smaller engine, which could be produced in cooperation with parent Zhejiang Geely of China, Volvo chief executive Stefan Jacoby told Automotive News Europe.
According to Jacoby, premium-car buyers are willing to spend extra even for subcompact-sized cars. Volvo’s top boos quipped that premium customers no longer define luxury based on the size of the car or number of cylinders, adding that there are other attributes that come into play. Sales of subcompact-sized vehicles in Europe rose by 19 percent to 332,262 units in 2011, according to data from market researchers JATO Dynamics.
Segment sales, however, have dwindled, with the six-month total volume dropping 10 percent to 148,891. Volvo has yet to field a vehicle in the subcompact-sized segment, as its smallest model is the compact V40, which rivals Audi A3 and BMW 1 series.Read the entire article Volvo considers building subcompact-sized model to rival Mini, Audi A1
SEAT SA is commencing production of an all-new car at its Martorell facilities in Spain. However, its plant won't be assembling a new SEAT car. The Spanish carmaker is now assembling the next generation of Audi’s small city car – the new 2019 Audi A1.
The sight of SEAT producing Audi vehicles isn't surprising as both carmakers are members of the larger Volkswagen Group. In addition, the A1 isn't the Audi vehicle produced at SEAT’s Martorrel site. In the middle of 2011, the VW Group assigned the SEAT facility to produce the Audi Q3 luxury subcompact crossover. Since then until July 2018, the Martorrel site had been producing the previous generation of the Audi Q3 and total Spanish production of the subcompact crossover reached nearly 800,000 units.
When the second generation of the Audi Q3 was unveiled, it was decided that the production of the subcompact crossover will be moved from Martorell to the Gyor facilities in Hungary. On the other hand, the previous generation of the A1 was assembled in Brussels. The idle manufacturing capacity at Martorrel left by the Audi Q3 might have prompted the VW Group to transfer the production of the second generation from Brussels to Martorell.Read the entire article Martorrel site is now producing the second generation of Audi A1
Volvo’s performance brand, Polestar, is all-set to redefine the way people purchase their new vehicles. But even before it rolls out it this innovative brand and retail concept, Polestar is opening its very first showroom based on traditional network of dealerships. Its new showrooms – to be called as Polestar Spaces – will have it first brick-and-mortar location in Oslo, Norway. The Polestar Space in Oslo will commence its operations in the middle of 2019.
Thomas Ingenlath, chief executive of Polestar, called Polestar Spaces as a vital part of the brand’s customer experience, as it serves as the location where the carmaker physically meets its customers. The new Polestar Space will be found on Ovre Slottsgate in downtown Oslo, as located in a prominent retail environment along with other progressive brand stores.
Actually, the performance brand’s choice of location didn’t come as a surprise. Oslo is the capital city of Norway, where people are more likely to buy an electric vehicle instead of a conventionally powered one. Ingenlath remarked that it is logical to start the Polestar Space story in Oslo, since Norway is considered one of the most important EV markets in the world.Read the entire article First-ever Polestar Space to open in Oslo, Norway by mid-2019
Volvo Cars is presenting a new concept car that provides a glimpse of what the company envisions for the future of mobility. With this new concept car called 360c, Volvo Cars is essentially proposing that a fully autonomous land travel could replace air travel over long distances.
A fully autonomous concept is nothing new. Quite a number of concepts like this have been presented through the past years. But while other concepts offer a living space inside a fully autonomous, Volvo’s study -- the new Volvo 360c autonomous concept – allows its passengers to sleep like a log inside while being transported to their destinations.
The new Volvo 360c isn't just a fully autonomous car, is it also connected and electric. It is in this future that Volvo sees a holistic approach in terms of travel. As a fully autonomous, fully electric car, the 360c doesn’t have steering wheel and an internal combustion engine. Because of the absence of these components, passengers could be positioned in rows of two or three.Read the entire article Volvo Cars says 360c concept is an alternative to short-haul air travel
Many of us are excited for the upcoming 2018 Beijing Motor Show. But one of the models we are particularly thrilled to witness is a concept based on the Volvo S90, its flagship sedan. The show car first came to life as the three seater Excellence version. But the model had gone through a number of changes on the inside to make the ride experience even more enjoyable for rear seated passengers.
Included in the model highlights would be the headliner on which various visual elements are displayed based on the passenger’s preferred theme. This varies from the Northern Lights, Archipelago, Swan Lake, to the Scandinavian Forest. Aside from the themes mentioned, the S90 Ambience Concept also features what they call a Nocturnal mode, which can be turned on when the passenger wants to rest. In contrary to that, there is also a “Freedom” mode that will give you a boost and lifts your energy. But that’s only if you want to be woken up.
Inside the cabin, the Volvo S90 Ambience has been equipped with the Bowers and Wilkins sound system. Therefore, the dynamic ceiling makes use of the aforementioned sound system. Each theme can be selected with the use of dedicated smartphone app, which can personalise the aural experience. The high end audio system has also an ace up its sleeve as it comes with small tweeters embedded into the headrests.Read the entire article Volvo S90 Ambience Concept is the answer for those who want next-level comfort and luxury
For the 2018 New York Auto Show, Volvo is expected to introduce a new model for us. In fact, they are introducing two models, namely the range topping Inscription trim of the 2019 XC40 and the 2019 V60.
Of course, to makes the XC40 Inscription stand out, it has been given features that can’t be found in other cars. The company’s image has elements like leather upholstery with nicely bolstered seats upfront. The panels and pillars then got some black trim, contrasted by gray wood trim, while the infotainment system is then covered in metal. It sits on a set of wheels with five sets of dual spokes. The Swedish automaker also says that the Inscription has a long list of standard equipment that is uncommon in the compact premium SUV market.
Though Volvo does not specify, the XC40 Inscription will likely use a 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that produces 248 horsepower (185 kilowatts) and 258 pound feet (350 Newton metres) of torque. This is coupled to an eight speed automatic that sends power to the all wheel drive system. This is the same mill that was installed in the XC40 in the United States when it was first launched.Read the entire article Volvo debuts XC40 Inscription and V60 at 2018 New York Auto Show
Earlier this week, on exactly Monday morning, was a devastating incident that involved Uber, an autonomous vehicle, and a pedestrian. Long story short, there was a pedestrian that was hit by an autonomous Uber vehicle, and was left dead in Arizona.
The vehicle was an autonomous Volvo XC90, and the victim was a female pedestrian who had just crossed in front of the vehicle outside of a crosswalk. The woman did not pass away on the spot, and was even brought to the hospital. However, she later died due to the injuries she had on her body.
It was in Tempe, near Mill Avenue and Curry Road, where the incident occurred, said the local police. This, in fact, is the very first incident that involved a self driving vehicle. According to reports by The New York Times, the vehicle was in autonomous mode, with a safety driver behind the wheel when the incident occurred outside of a crosswalk.Read the entire article Autonomous Uber vehicle kills pedestrian in Arizona
Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars has taken the wraps off its latest creation – a new midsize premium wagon (estate) dubbed as the new 2019 Volvo V60. Volvo intended the V60 to be a family all-rounder, underscoring its position as a carmaker with the tradition of producing good-looking yet practical cars.
To strongly deliver the message that the new V60 is a family all-rounder, Volvo went for an unconventional yet persuasive manner of introduction. Instead of unveiling the new V60 at a motor show or at an auto-related event, the carmaker revealed the new premium wagon at the driveway of an up-market villa in the suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden. It was driven into the driveway – where it really belongs -- by Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo’s senior vice president for the Europe, Middle East, Asia region. This way, Volvo was able to send a clear message that the new V60 is designed to cater to the needs and wants of modern family.
As introduced, the new V60 is underpinned by Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform that also underpins the new XC60 and four top-of-the-line 90 Series cars. So far, the V60 is the smallest and lightest vehicle to be underpinned by this platform.Read the entire article Elegant practicality defines newly unveiled 2019 Volvo V60 midsize premium wagon
We all know that Volvo has a lot of things planned for their future. In fact, the Swedish automaker is going to reveal the next generation S60 this summer, and apart from that, they are planning to come out with a Cross Country version of the V60. In general, they will develop more powerful and efficient hybrid powertrains, while they transition to purely electric power.
This does not surprise us though. Instead, what comes as a surprise to us is the fact that Volvo’s current generation of turbocharged internal combustion engine is the last of its kind. It was Hakan Sameulsson, the brand’s CEO, who revealed this information the same time they presented the new V60 wagon in Stockholm, Sweden.
This statement may be shocking to most of you, but it will take quite some time for Volvo to completely get rid of their gas engine – in around seven years perhaps. Also, there will be a new generation of the SPA architecture that they have planned for 2021, but it will continue to use the current generation ICEs albeit heavily modified.Read the entire article Volvo will not develop more combustion engines amid focus on electric power
Volvo had just unveiled its all new family friendly wagon, the V60 in Sweden. It looks good, and it comes with a range of plug-in hybrid powertrains to choose from. Though the standard model may already be more than enough for some people, we’re in for bigger and better things as Volvo has announced that there will be a Cross Country version of it.
Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo boss, had an interview with Roadshow at the V60 debut, and he said that the wagon will be getting a more capable and functional Cross Country version. We do not know when to expect the higher riding, body cladded V60 to be released, but it shouldn’t be too far away from the standard model’s unveiling.
After confirming that a V60 will soon arrive, Kerssemakers made sure to give the nameplate’s significance within the brand. In other words, the model will not be produced in huge volumes. He also said that it is part of their heritage that needs to be continued. In fact, the automaker has already been offering a Cross Country version of the S60 sedan, which already needs an overhaul, as well as the V90.Read the entire article Volvo confirms production of Cross Country version alongside standard V60
Last year was probably one of the busiest years for the European New Car Assessment Programme, with a total of around 70 cars tested. But amongst that huge pack of vehicles, one model managed to really stand out, and this was the second-generation Volvo XC60. After going through all those cars, the European NCAP made a decision that this is the safest car overall.
Ever since, Volvo has had a good reputation when it comes to car safety, and that is why we are not surprised that the new XC60 got the highest score during the tests. It scored 98% for the Adult Occupant category, and for Safety Assist, it got 95%, which still is pretty impressive as most cars do not ever get a score that high.
Malin Ekholm, Vice President of Volvo Cars Safety Center, promised that no one should ever get seriously injured or killed ever riding a Volvo car by the beginning of next decade. And based on the results we just saw, it seems like the automaker is right on track with fulfilling this promise.Read the entire article 2018 Volvo XC60 gets the Euro NCAP’s best ratings for 2017
Today, Volvo has a pretty complete range of new SUVs. These models vary from the largest XC90 to the smallest model which is the XC40. At the top of the range is the S90 along with the V90. Now, it is time for them to update the smaller cars in its lineup, and we mean their sedans and crossovers. In fact, the company is already testing for the new S60 and V60, and according to Auto Express, Volvo executives exactly know what they want from the new V40.
Starting with the V40 hatchback, the next generation model will now sit on a CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform just like that of the XC40. They will be built on the same wheelbase too. Apart from that, Volvo thinks that both vehicles can share a number of components, such as their powertrains and infotainment systems.
When Volvo launches the V40, it will initially be equipped with a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Aside from this, a plug-in hybrid may be available from the beginning too, if not later on towards its life cycle. In Europe, a diesel option will be available too following a fully electric version later on.Read the entire article Next Volvo V40 will get two battery options for the EV
At this year’s FIA World Touring Car Championship, it was Volvo that stood out and became the victor with an S60 TC1 race car. So to celebrate this victory, the Swedish automaker dished out a handful of special edition S60s and V60s that get their inspiration from the motorsport. For your reference, it was Thed Bjork who took the driver’s championship during the FIA World Touring Car Championship. He was the guy behind the S60 Polestar TC1, and if you didn’t know, this is the very first time a Swedish company won the championship.
Having said that, the new V60 Polestar Performance World Championship Edition and the Volvo S60 package are available on all D4, D5, T5 and T6 models. The package includes visual enhancements such as a set of 19-inch bespoke Polestar light alloy wheels that are dressed in performance focused tires, a sculpted diffuser, and a new rear spoiler. There is also a Polestar gear lever that can be found in the cabin.
As for the mechanical bits, the special edition model gets a free flow stainless steel exhaust system, a sports air filter, and updated suspension dampers and springs that come with the package. With Polestar’s optimisation, horsepower has also increased by 10 (7 kilowatts), and torque is improved by 36 pound feet (50 Newton metres). The current engine is paired to quicker gearshifts and improved throttle response.Read the entire article Volvo comes out with Polestar Champion Editions of the S60 and V60
The other day, it was confirmed that Volvo will finally bring the XC40 to US soil, where it will first make an appearance at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. Now, the small crossover will finally hit production phase at the Swedish company’s Ghent plant in Belgium. Having said that, we can expect to see the first batch of production models roll off the production line and head off to their respective owners sometime next year.
This early, the automaker has already received 13,000 orders, so they will definitely be busy producing enough examples of the XC40 in the next couple of months. To be more specific, customers should be able to receive their vehicles early next year, according to Volvo.
Volvo Cars chief executive and president Hakan Samuelsson said that the beginning of the XC40’s production is a special day for both Ghent and Volvo, and this particular model represents a bright future for the aforementioned companies.Read the entire article 2018 Volvo XC40 production begins in Belgium
While the Volvo XC40 isn’t new anymore to European buyers, it’s only now that the Swedish brand’s smallest SUV will be brought to the United States. The Volvo XC40 SUV will make its American debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show, together with what the company refers to as a new “subscription-based” car buying experience.
To enlighten you guys, the program called “Care by Volvo” is a car-buying service that will make purchasing a car as simple as owning a cell phone. Hakan Samuelson (Volvo CEO) and Anders Gustafsson (Volvo President) are both scheduled to talk about this new system on November 29 in the city of angels, so people would have a clearer understanding of it. Of course, they will show off the subscription service together with the new XC40 for the first time in North America.
In a recent interview with Gustafsson, he said that California is the place where technology cultures and transportation meet. He then added that the Los Angeles Auto Show will be the ideal place for them to introduce something like this, where both worlds are involved. The president also gave us a tidbit about the purpose of this new service, explaining that Care by Volvo, alongside the new SUV, will make life less complicated for their customers.Read the entire article Volvo XC40 will make its debut in the United States at 2017 LA Auto Show
As we know, Volvo will be holding the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race soon. And to celebrate the start of this event, the Geely-owned luxury automaker prepared an eco-friendly special edition V90 Cross Country rugged wagon. This unique vehicle was made by the automaker’s Special Vehicles department, in a bid to fight marine pollution. Parts of the car like the carpet inlays were made from manufactured fabric called Econyl - made from 100 percent recycled nylon. And believe it or not, the luxurious cabin was actually made from fishing nets that had been abandoned and extracted from the seabed.
What makes it different from a standard V90 Cross Country are the colour accents that it will come with. One will notice a combination of matte grey and bright orange accents on its Crystal White body, which the standard model does not have. If you remember, we actually first saw these styling details back in 2014 on the Concept XC Coupe, and it is finally being implemented on a production model. There are other novelties such as a new set of alloy wheels, while the seat upholstery gets a tailor-made stitching.
To give back, Volvo will donate 100 euros ($116) of the sales from each of the first 3,000 cars that will be assembled. That goes up to a total of 300,000 euros ($348,400). These funds will go to Volvo’s Ocean Race’s Science Program, which hopes to clean up ocean plastics. However, we do not know if the automaker will stop at making only 3,000 examples of the model.Read the entire article 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country will take part in campaign against ocean pollution
It was just a few days ago that Polestar officially took off the wraps from its very first production model called the Polestar 1. While this was inspired by a vintage-inspired coupe, it comes with modern technology and a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain. At first glance, one may be reminded of the Volvo P1800. This has led to it being imagined as a shooting brake like that of the P1800ES. In fact, an artist from X-Tomi Design already made a rendering of the long-roof model as early as now.
But instead of rendering it to look like the P1800ES with a huge rear glass, it was the outgoing V90 wagon that gave X-Tomi Design the inspiration. It was designed with a higher roof that appears to give the cabin more space and comfort, while also replacing the tiny bench in the back of the standard Polestar 1 coupe.
Whether this is a coincidence or not, Volvo has actually already considered a vehicle much like the Polestar 1 shooting brake, and it was introduced back in 2014 as the Concept Estate. And three years later, it turned out to be the current V90.Read the entire article Would a Polestar 1 Shooting Brake work?
With the introduction of the new Volvo XC40, the carmaker is now able to cover three size sections of the global SUV market, which is considered as the fastest growing segment. Volvo is hoping that the new XC40 would allow it to take advantage of the ever-growing demand for SUVs around the world, enabling it to rake in more sales and become more profitable.
At launch, the new Volvo XC40 will be available in various trim levels, like the Momentum and R-Design. The entry-level trim and range-topping Inscription versions are due to be introduced later after the launch. XC40 models with the Momentum trim are provided, as standard, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a nine-inch touch screen infotainment system with navigation.
Also standard are LED headlights, Sensus Connect Internet, dual-zone climate control and rear parking assist as well as leather heated front seats and 18-inch alloy wheels. When the R-Design trim is availed, twin exhaust tips and a lowered sport suspension is provided. The R-Design trim also includes leather and aluminum trim in the cabin with black highlights on the exterior.Read the entire article 2018 Volvo XC40 small premium SUV makes its official debut
On August 21, 2017, many people in North America witnessed the once in a lifetime solar eclipse, as the last time it occurred was over 99 years ago. The eclipse crossed what they called the "Path of Totality" as the sun moved from west to east, covering some parts of the United States.
Unsurprisingly, this phenomenon was used by automakers as some kind of marketing tool. For instance, Nissan used this natural event to introduce the Midnight Edition, or blacked out version of models like the Titan, Titan XD, and the Frontier. This is a limited edition blacked out livery of the said models. Volvo, on the other hand, used the solar eclipse to present a protective screen that people can stick on their XC60 SUV's sunroof.
Apart from Nissan and Volvo, other automakers like Land Rover, Mitsubishi, and Karma used the solar eclipse to as a backdrop of their cars. Having said that, all three companies brought out their cars to the field, photographing them during the event.Read the entire article Which automaker was able to best use the solar eclipse for marketing?
Recently, we have been hearing news that some of the biggest automakers will not make an appearance at the upcoming 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Despite being one of the biggest motor shows, they seem to not be getting majority of the best brands - for this year’s event at least.
Normally, we would expect most brands to showcase their new cars here. But according to Automotive News Europe, companies like DS, Infiniti, Peugeot, Jeep, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Mitsubishi, Volvo, and Nissan will not be attending the grand event this year. And these brands take up about 20 percent of total sales in Europe.
You must be wondering why then? Firstly, taking part in the biggest shows means spending more too. And the Frankfurt event is probably one of the most expensive events for automakers to attend. Furthermore, spending a lot of money to put your cars on display in these events doesn’t necessarily translate to more sales. So sometimes, these companies lose more money than they expect to earn.Read the entire article 9 major automakers will not attend 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show
