Audi drops plans to produce the A2 electric car concept

Audi has dropped plans to make a production version of its Audi A2 electric car concept car from 2011, insiders said. The new model is inspired by the original aluminium spaceframe A2 and is set to enter production in 2015 as both a conventional plug-in hybrid and as a pure EV. Autocar talked to sources who said that future Audi models will make use of lessons that were taken from the new A2 project.

However, plans for the aluminium-framed production model had been canceled. If it was approved for launching, the new A2 would have directly went up against the upcoming BMW i3. Just like the original Mercedes A-class, a ‘sandwich floor’ construction was used by the A2 concept. It would have been used for storing the lithium-ion battery pack. The front wheels are powered by a 114bhp electric motor.

In addition, Audi claimed that after recharging for four hours, the battery pack could offer a 125-mile range. Audi’s surprising move is part of a rising sentiment in the car industry that the market for pure electric vehicles is much smaller than predicted.

Audi A2 will grow in size and receive the new MQB platform

Audi has made extensive changes to the execution of its second-generation A2, moving it up from being in the supermini class into a hatch with the same size as a Golf. At the Frankfurt show last year, Audi introduced its near production-ready version, a preview of the new high-roof hatchback.

Audi chief Rupert Stadler said that this car will increase the length of the supermini concept from 3.8 meters to 4.1 meters, the length of the Volkswagen Golf. Several insiders said that because of this, it will be built on a version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform that’s bigger than what was initially imagined.

They also imply that the A2 production version, which is likely to come out in 2014, is taller by 60mm, going beyond the 1490mm of the concept to about 1550mm. This change comes after the concept’s styling was criticized because it didn’t offer enough load-carrying capacity.

2011 Frankfurt Motor Show: Audi A2 Concept is a small beauty

At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi showed off the futuristic A2 concept as the third all-electric Audi design study to feature the Vorsprung durch Technik brand. The four-seat A2 concept is futuristic-looking but it appears more familiar than the other two urban concept electric studies that have very radical signs.

The A2 is light and its package conserves space with the use of advanced multi-material hybrid construction. Its space-age specification consists of contact-free battery charging, LED matrix lighting technology, ‘by-wire’ steering and braking, and a semi-autonomous running mode.

This concept weighs only 1,150kg. with the use of advanced Audi ultra-lightweight construction techniques. It also marks the first time that hybrid multimaterial construction is used. The Audi Space Frame (ASF) construction principle is used in combining the different materials with one another. The superstructure is built mostly from aluminum and is complemented by add-on parts in Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP).

Audi A2 Concept: details, specs and photos released

Audi’s futuristic A2 concept has been confirmed to be the third all-electric Audi design study to take the center stage for the Vorsprung durch Technik brand at the 2011 Frankfurt Show. This four-seat A2 concept, a purely electric vehicle, is similarly ahead of its time just like the two other radical-styled urban concept electric studies.

It has a remarkably space-efficient and lightweight packaging which has been achieved with state-of-the-art multi-material hybrid construction. Its futuristic specification includes a semi-autonomous running mode, LED matrix lighting technology, ‘by-wire’ steering and braking and contact-free battery charging.

Advanced Audi ultra-lightweight construction methods limit the weight of this latest innovative study to just 1,150kg. It unites hybrid multi-material construction, marking the first time for very different materials to be combined using the Audi Space Frame (ASF) construction principle.

Although it’s now quite a surprise, Audi released today the firs photos with the all-new A2 Concept, which will be revealed this month at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. According to the manufacturer the new A2 Concept measures just 3.80 meters (12.47 ft) long, 1.69 meters (5.54 ft) wide and 1.49 meters (4.89 ft) high and offers plenty of room for four people. Moreover, the car features the next plenty of room for four people.

This means that we find a package of LEDs and microreflectors that generate a high-resolution and non-glaring high-beam light. Furthermore, the daytime running light fibers frame the highly efficient LED low-beam light module. Regarding the tail lights, these can adapt their illumination to the visibility conditions. If you ride on a foggy road the rear fog light will be produced by laser diodes, which can projects a red triangle onto the road as a warning.

"The dynamic light runs below the edge of the window from the front to the rear of the A2 concept – a band of light that contains a multitude of innovative, dynamic light functions. Integrated approach sensors detect the owner and unlock the doors via gesture control. While driving, the dynamic light functions as a continuous side marker light. If the car’s indicator is activated, light impulses run throughout the entire band of light." said the press release.

Sources inside Audi say that plans for a spiritual successor to the lightweight A2 city car are advancing. It’s believed that Audi decided to replace the car due to the strong demand for the recently launched A1 and the growing relevance of fuel efficiency, which the original, aluminum-bodied A2 holds a high rating for.

When the A2 ceased production in 2005, it was regarded as a sales flop. An insider told Autocar that the company is having internal discussions about a new A2 and is considering several concepts.

The source said to Autocar that the new car is likely to first be shown as a concept and will take a similar mould as the old model, i.e. futuristic, low volume and making use of state-of-the-art technology. He said that the vehicle will be “unashamedly hi-tech.”

An eco-car will be built by Audi using the Volkswagen group's New Small Family platform, according to group CEO Martin Winterkorn. In the last few years, the NSF platform has been used in many VW concepts, including the Up! two-door (and eUp! electric car), the Space Up! microvan, and Up! Lite super-eco streamliner coupe.

Winterkorn also confirmed that Audi, Seat, and Skoda will join the NSF as well. The Seat and Skoda brands are intended for Europe and developing markets, while the Audi is meant to reach more parts of the global.

For about a year now, Audi executives have been telling us to watch out for a new A2 but then it won’t be an exact replacement for the original.

Almost all of the auto manufacturers of Europe are concentrating on the latest generation of highly compact vehicles to confront the stringent emissions requirement scheduled to take effect in the next few years, and Audi is one of the most vigorous in the industry. Audi is said to be toiling on a small number of the latest versions which are all ranked beneath the A3, as its present entry-level vehicle.

A production variant of the A1 Metroproject concept will be included in these new models, which will possibly be available in an assortment of arrangements including 3 and 5-door versions, plus a Sportback, cabrio, and a hybrid.

Also, there will be an Audi variant of VW's latest minicar, which will be patterned on an identical NSF platform observed in the up! concept vehicle. Lastly, the most current information shows that there will be an introduction of an heir to the poor-selling A2 compact. Audi will open an athletic hatchback with a high roof structure sometime in 2014, according to AutoBild.
