Audi boosts output due to strong demand on A3, Q5 and A6, A7 and R8 models

Audi has a dynamic start this year thanks to strong demand on models such as the A3, Q5 and A6, A7 and R8. In order to maintain the same path, the German manufacturer will boost output of its best-sellers and as a result it added 33 shifts at its German plants in January and February. In February alone, the German company added ten special shifts in Ingolstadt and three in Neckarsulm.

Meanwhile eight additional shifts are planned in Ingolstadt and two more in Neckarsulm this month. Board of Management Member for Production Dr. Frank Dreves: “Our Audi models are very popular all over the world; our order books are full. This makes us confident that we will grow again this year as well. For the coming months, we anticipate ongoing good utilization of capacity and additional shifts at our two domestic plants in Germany.”

“The Works Council approved the special shifts that the management applied for in the first few weeks of the year in order to make our manufacturing as economic as possible. The order situation is excellent and the additional shifts demonstrate the high flexibility of our employees. The workforce is thus making a significant contribution to the competitiveness of the production sites in Germany within the Group’s international production network,” stated the Chairman of Audi’s General Works Council, Peter Mosch.

2019 Audi A7 Sportback retains much of the A8’s appeal

The Audi A7 Sportback, whether you would like to call it a sportback or a four-door coupe, has always been a beautiful car. And this week, the 2019 model year will be debuting in Germany with an even more striking appearance since we first saw it seven years ago.

Beginning with numbers, it is a bit shorter than its predecessor at 195.6 inches long, and is now only 55.9 tall, so it appears to sit closer to the ground. Unlike the A8, it has a wider face and a lower grille, giving it a sportier appearance. The hood now has lines that lead to the broader front fenders. Like its predecessor, it has got a sleek roof that seamlessly plunges toward a pop-up spoiler. As for the trunk capacity, there is 18.9 cubic feet of storage that can be maximized to 49.1 cubic feet when the seats are folded down. The rear end gets one full-width tail light that stretches from one end to another, and is made up of 13 individual LED strips that varies in height across the width of the trunklid. Customers will be able to get wheels as large as 21 inches in diameter.

With a stylish exterior comes with a stylish cabin as well. It is light and airy with plenty of horizontal lines up the dashboard and door panels. In fact, the 2019 A7’s interior resembles that of the new A8. Despite its shorter length, passengers get an increase in headroom as well as rear knee space, thanks to the extra 0.8 inch interior length. A7 buyers will be able to choose from a five-place or a 2+2 seating option.

Scale model of 2018 Audi A7 Sportback leaks ahead of official model unveiling

We are all aware that Audi has plans to reveal the 2018 A7 Sportback soon, specifically towards the end of the year. Though we expected a grand reveal and a full-sized vehicle, we were surprised by something much smaller - that is, a die cast scale model of the Sportback.

What just happened? Well, Autoweek.nl has leaked an image of the A7 Sportback, except it isn’t the real car. Rather, it is a scale model, which makes it much smaller than what all of us expected to see. Of course, this can’t beat the awesomeness of the real model. In earlier spy shots, the A7 and S7 will have a design that mixes together elements from the first-generation car combined with the Prologue series of concept cars.

Though the leaked image just shows a scale model, we could still kind of tell how the A7 Sportback will look. The A7’s face resembles that of the A8, and we already know that based on the spy shots we have seen before. What’s new is the fact that the scale model shows us a more sculpted hood and more body lines. The A7 has a wider single-frame grille, thin headlights backed with an array of LEDs, and more glass on the sides.

Audi to drop A3 three-door hatchback from its next-generation lineup

What happens when an auto company finds that a certain offering is not selling enough to make a good business case? Continuing to build and sell such vehicle would only be counterproductive, thus, stopping its production could be a good decision. That might the case for the Audi A3 three-door hatchback, which according to a report by Autocar, would be dropped in the coming years.

The fourth generation of the Audi A3 family is due to arrive sometime in 2019, ushering a new era for the German premium carmaker’s small family car. However, it seems that Audi is not bent on giving the A3 three-door hatchback another crack for glory, AutoCar reports, citing sources privy with what goes on inside the luxury carmaker.

As per the British auto publication, Audi officials have indicated that the dropping of the A3 three-door hatchback is part of the carmaker’s model consolidation program. It added that the program was prompted as part of the cost-cutting measures needed to ensure that there are enough funds for fixing the Volkswagen Group’s Dieselgate scandal. Simply put, its continued decline in terms of sales means that there is no more business-related reasons for the auto company to allow the A3 three-door hatchback to live on through the next generation.

A couple of days ago, Audi announced an update in terms of the pricing of their 2018 lineup. With the price increase, several models will have more features as standard equipment while there will be more models that will have sportier interior and exterior design packages.

The Audi A3 Sportback E-Tron had always been a successful model since it was first released in the United States. Sales charts of the said model from January 2016 up until March this year indicate that the model is doing well. In fact, the model made up around 13 percent of all Audi A3 sales in its first eight months, and by last December, the percentage went up to 20 percent.

The 2017 model was first sold with a price tag of $37,900, and it soon increased to $38,900. And naturally, there will be a price increase for the 2018 year model, with the Premium trim at $39,500, the Premium Plus at $42,600, and $48,100 for the range-topping Prestige. That is about $600 to $1,300 more than the previous model.

Ingolstadt’s design honcho Marc Lichte recently had a talk with L’argus, a French online publication concerning Audi’s new premium models. Surprisingly, this brief conversation leads up to reveal not just a few details but also the official sketches of their new lineup. What you’re seeing right now are the designs of the A6 Sedan, A7 Sportback and the all-new Audi A8. Well, there’s no better way to compare each new model than having them side by side, is there?

While flipping through these drawings ourselves, we thought they all seem to look the same. Except maybe for the new A7--- which bears the sportiest design of the three new sedans. But as we gazed more closely at every detail, we determined how each one is very different from the other. That’s when we noticed how Audi’s new single-frame grille comes with different characteristics.

Since the A6 sedan has relatively smaller configuration, its bumper grille also has a design of its own. Comparatively, the creases along the hood provide the A7 with a sportier look while it seems rather more aggressive on the A8’s fuller body.

With Audi targeting to expand its lineup to around 60 individual premium vehicles by the end of the decade, there is a high chance that the German carmaker would try to fill in every niche in the luxury category. Thus, if Auto Express’ report is credible, there is a big chance that Audi would introduce a coupe version of its next-generation A3.

Audi is expected to launch the fourth generation of the A3 in 2018 or 2019. The series will be headlined by the saloon (sedan), hatchback and Sportback versions. However, it appears that Audi wanted to further broaden the A3 family with a four-door coupe, which should allow Volkswagen’s premium arm to compete in a niche now dominated by the Mercedes-Benz CLA. A four-door coupe version of the Audi A3 should complete the lineup when it arrives – if it arrives – by the end of the decade.

According to Auto Express, launching a four-door coupe version of the A3 would allow Audi to shift some of its compact models into the executive class sans any significant increase in their prices. This would be similar to the strategy employed by Mercedes when it launched the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake compact cars. Strategically, the move would allow Audi to better keep up with Mercedes – which managed to grab the crown as the best-selling luxury car brand in world in 2016. Creating a four-door coupe version of the A3 would enable Audi it to fulfill its target of offering 60 individual models by 2020.

As many of us know, RS versions of any Audi’s vehicle models are more powerful and more dynamic than their S counterparts. Thus, for the Audi A7 model family, the RS7 is definitely a much better performer than the S7. But this is not applicable in the case of the Audi S7 tuned by M&D Exclusive Cardesign. This tuned S7 should leave the RS7 behind the dust.

One of the primary reasons why the Audi RS7 has more performance than the S7 is the engine. Both the Audi S7 and the RS7 are powered by the same engine that is differently tuned for each model. The 4.0-liter turbocharged TFSI V8 engine on the latest S7 (2017 model year) could provide 450 hp of max output and 406 lb.-ft. of peak torque. This level of power pales compared to a better tuned TFSI V8 engine that delivers 560 hp of max output and 516 lb.-ft. of peak torque for the 2017 Audi RS7. A higher performance variant of the RS7 boasts of having 605 hp of max output and 553 lb.-ft. of peak torque at its disposal.

However, the Audi S7 tuned by M&D Exclusive Cardesign isn’t the 2017 version – but the 2013 model is used instead. The 2013 Audi S7 – as standard -- features a V8 engine that could provide ‎420 hp of output and ‎406 lb.-ft. of torque. M&D Exclusive Cardesign fine-tuned this V8 engine to now deliver a whopping 690 hp (515 kW) of max output and 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of peak torque.

The A3 compact hatchback now gets the ‘ultra’ badge, which means that this model now offers the most outstanding fuel economy and the most rigorously controlled emissions in five Audi ranges. The new A3 and A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI ultra models are capable of returning 83mpg and has CO2 emissions of only 89g/km.

These vehicles are included in an expanded 2016 Model Year A3 lineup that makes the quattro all-wheel-drive more accessible to consumers. Ordering has started for these vehicles. Buyers in the UK are expected to get them in August. The A3 represents the ideal foundation for an ultra model as it features optimized aerodynamics and is 80 kg lighter than its predecessor because of its advanced lightweight construction.

Audi had to modify the final drive ratio in the standard six-speed manual transmission that works with the EU6-compliant 1.6 TDI engine in order to build the A3 1.6 TDI ultra. The lowered sports suspension was incorporated and rolling resistance was minimized with the help of special tires.

Audi’s A3 Sportback e-tron was named as "Value Champion 2015” by the Auto Bild and Schwacke Market Research Institute after it was revealed that it was the most stable in terms of residual value among compact cars.

Being the “Value Champion,” it means that the A3 Sportback experienced the least depreciation over a four-year period. The first plug-in hybrid from Audi, the A3 had a 57.3% residual value. The A3 allows consumers to enjoy driving without giving up the efficiency in power.

Audi is increasing the production of A3 Sportback e-tron at its main plant in Ingolstadt. The plant is expected to come out with 50 cars on a daily basis. Audi AG Board of Management Member for Production Dr. Hubert Waltl revealed that the production of the A3 started last summer and with the integration of the assembly work to the line, there is no more need to separate the manufacture of the different parts.

Waltl adds that this shows not just the flexibility but also the efficiency of those who plan the production as well as its employees. Audi hopes that the A3 Sportback will change how people will view mobility.

The A3 Sportback is a five-door vehicle with a 1.4-liter engine and 75-kW electric motor. This combination allows the car to have a 204 horsepower output with a fuel consumption of 1.5 liters for every 100 kilometers.

Cars such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Audi A3 Sedan are becoming more popular in the United States due to the fact that they are priced below $30,000 and offer plenty of standard features. Asked if Lexus would offer such a model, executive vice president of the company, Mark Templin, said that they really can’t offer a vehicle with the quality, durability and reliability seen on other Lexus models.

Still, he added that they can offer a car under $30,000 but it wouldn’t be a Lexus, it would be a Toyota. Mercedes-Benz introduced the CLA back in September 2013 and now, this model comprises 11 percent of the brand’s car sales.

Templin considers that what the German carmakers are doing is not luxury. Moreover, publications such as Consumer Reports and USA Today weren’t convinced either by the Mercedes-Benz CLA validating Templin’s point that this is not luxury.

Audi cannot deny anymore what the fans want. That is why the luxury carmaker is bringing the Audi A3 TDI Sportback to the United States this summer. This would be the latest model joining the recently launched Audi A3 family as well as the TDI model lineup.

The Audi A3 TDI Sportback will have its US debut at the New York International Auto Show on April 16, 2015. It will be a premium-class compact hatchback that combines the utility of a crossover, the looks of a coupe, and impressive fuel efficiency. Audi is so confident that vehicle buyers in the United States will embrace diesel that it is bringing back diesel-powered five-door version of the A3 compact to the country next summer, the German carmaker announced ahead of the New York Auto Show. The A3 five-door will be powered by a 2-liter TDI engine.

Audi withdrew the last-generation A3 hatch from the US at the end of the 2013 model year, but the compact managed to capture “an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base,” Audi of America President Scott Keogh said in a statement. Keogh said the five-door version of the A3 compact has been one of Audi’s most requested models since they unveiled the new A3 family.

The diesel A3 will be competing against entry-level luxury cars like the Lexus CT hybrid, a similarly sized hatch having a starting price of $32,960 including shipping. Lexus sold 15,071 CT hybrids in 2013 in the US while Audi delivered just 7,205 units of the previous A3 hatch in 2012. The sales figure in 2012 showed that around 55 percent of A3 buyers opted for the TDI engine.

If it’s not a Volkswagen, then it is an Audi! As a result, the 2014 World Car of the Year is the Audi A3, the well-known premium compact bestseller from the German carmaker owned by Volkswagen Group. Of course, Audi is not a stranger to this award as it won the inaugural 2005 World Car of the Year title, but also three World Performance Car titles in 2010, 2008 and 2007, and two World Car Design of the Year titles in 2008 and 2007.

Back in 2013, the Volkswagen Golf was the car that won the same title, while in 2012 Volkswagen Up! surprized us all. In 2011, the Nissan Leaf was the lucky winner, but in 2010 Volkswagen’s Polo was the leader, while 2009 saw the Volkswagen Golf. The Mazda2/Demio received the same title in 2008, a year ahead of the Lexus LS460 which was the winner in 2007.

The BMW 3-Series received this award in 2006. As we said, the inaugural title was received by the Audi A6, back in 2005. If the Audi A3 was this year’s winner, the German cars dominated the rest of the titles.
