2019 Audi A7 Sportback retains much of the A8’s appeal

The Audi A7 Sportback, whether you would like to call it a sportback or a four-door coupe, has always been a beautiful car. And this week, the 2019 model year will be debuting in Germany with an even more striking appearance since we first saw it seven years ago.

Beginning with numbers, it is a bit shorter than its predecessor at 195.6 inches long, and is now only 55.9 tall, so it appears to sit closer to the ground. Unlike the A8, it has a wider face and a lower grille, giving it a sportier appearance. The hood now has lines that lead to the broader front fenders. Like its predecessor, it has got a sleek roof that seamlessly plunges toward a pop-up spoiler. As for the trunk capacity, there is 18.9 cubic feet of storage that can be maximized to 49.1 cubic feet when the seats are folded down. The rear end gets one full-width tail light that stretches from one end to another, and is made up of 13 individual LED strips that varies in height across the width of the trunklid. Customers will be able to get wheels as large as 21 inches in diameter.

With a stylish exterior comes with a stylish cabin as well. It is light and airy with plenty of horizontal lines up the dashboard and door panels. In fact, the 2019 A7’s interior resembles that of the new A8. Despite its shorter length, passengers get an increase in headroom as well as rear knee space, thanks to the extra 0.8 inch interior length. A7 buyers will be able to choose from a five-place or a 2+2 seating option.

Scale model of 2018 Audi A7 Sportback leaks ahead of official model unveiling

We are all aware that Audi has plans to reveal the 2018 A7 Sportback soon, specifically towards the end of the year. Though we expected a grand reveal and a full-sized vehicle, we were surprised by something much smaller - that is, a die cast scale model of the Sportback.

What just happened? Well, Autoweek.nl has leaked an image of the A7 Sportback, except it isn’t the real car. Rather, it is a scale model, which makes it much smaller than what all of us expected to see. Of course, this can’t beat the awesomeness of the real model. In earlier spy shots, the A7 and S7 will have a design that mixes together elements from the first-generation car combined with the Prologue series of concept cars.

Though the leaked image just shows a scale model, we could still kind of tell how the A7 Sportback will look. The A7’s face resembles that of the A8, and we already know that based on the spy shots we have seen before. What’s new is the fact that the scale model shows us a more sculpted hood and more body lines. The A7 has a wider single-frame grille, thin headlights backed with an array of LEDs, and more glass on the sides.

Official sketches of the next-generation Audi A6, A7 and A8 finally revealed

Ingolstadt’s design honcho Marc Lichte recently had a talk with L’argus, a French online publication concerning Audi’s new premium models. Surprisingly, this brief conversation leads up to reveal not just a few details but also the official sketches of their new lineup. What you’re seeing right now are the designs of the A6 Sedan, A7 Sportback and the all-new Audi A8. Well, there’s no better way to compare each new model than having them side by side, is there?

While flipping through these drawings ourselves, we thought they all seem to look the same. Except maybe for the new A7--- which bears the sportiest design of the three new sedans. But as we gazed more closely at every detail, we determined how each one is very different from the other. That’s when we noticed how Audi’s new single-frame grille comes with different characteristics.

Since the A6 sedan has relatively smaller configuration, its bumper grille also has a design of its own. Comparatively, the creases along the hood provide the A7 with a sportier look while it seems rather more aggressive on the A8’s fuller body.

M&D Exclusive Cardesign creates highly tuned Audi S7 with PD700R wide-body kit

As many of us know, RS versions of any Audi’s vehicle models are more powerful and more dynamic than their S counterparts. Thus, for the Audi A7 model family, the RS7 is definitely a much better performer than the S7. But this is not applicable in the case of the Audi S7 tuned by M&D Exclusive Cardesign. This tuned S7 should leave the RS7 behind the dust.

One of the primary reasons why the Audi RS7 has more performance than the S7 is the engine. Both the Audi S7 and the RS7 are powered by the same engine that is differently tuned for each model. The 4.0-liter turbocharged TFSI V8 engine on the latest S7 (2017 model year) could provide 450 hp of max output and 406 lb.-ft. of peak torque. This level of power pales compared to a better tuned TFSI V8 engine that delivers 560 hp of max output and 516 lb.-ft. of peak torque for the 2017 Audi RS7. A higher performance variant of the RS7 boasts of having 605 hp of max output and 553 lb.-ft. of peak torque at its disposal.

However, the Audi S7 tuned by M&D Exclusive Cardesign isn’t the 2017 version – but the 2013 model is used instead. The 2013 Audi S7 – as standard -- features a V8 engine that could provide ‎420 hp of output and ‎406 lb.-ft. of torque. M&D Exclusive Cardesign fine-tuned this V8 engine to now deliver a whopping 690 hp (515 kW) of max output and 701 lb-ft (950 Nm) of peak torque.

Audi has a dynamic start this year thanks to strong demand on models such as the A3, Q5 and A6, A7 and R8. In order to maintain the same path, the German manufacturer will boost output of its best-sellers and as a result it added 33 shifts at its German plants in January and February. In February alone, the German company added ten special shifts in Ingolstadt and three in Neckarsulm.

Meanwhile eight additional shifts are planned in Ingolstadt and two more in Neckarsulm this month. Board of Management Member for Production Dr. Frank Dreves: “Our Audi models are very popular all over the world; our order books are full. This makes us confident that we will grow again this year as well. For the coming months, we anticipate ongoing good utilization of capacity and additional shifts at our two domestic plants in Germany.”

“The Works Council approved the special shifts that the management applied for in the first few weeks of the year in order to make our manufacturing as economic as possible. The order situation is excellent and the additional shifts demonstrate the high flexibility of our employees. The workforce is thus making a significant contribution to the competitiveness of the production sites in Germany within the Group’s international production network,” stated the Chairman of Audi’s General Works Council, Peter Mosch.

Because of the high demand for Audi’s A6 and A7 models, the company added 12 shifts in the first quarter at its Neckarsulm, Germany plant. It also plans to add even more shifts in April. Through an e-mailed statement, we learned that Audi built about 2,600 more cars in Neckarsulm than originally planned in the quarter, according to personnel director Thomas Sigi.

Neckarsulm is Audi’s No. 2-largest plant after its main factory in Ingolstadt. In the statement, Audi said that in the first quarter of 2013, the economic conditions stayed “difficult.” However, it appears that luxury-car segment is resilient as Audi continues to take many orders even as the total market in Europe has been declining.

On March 12, the company said that Audi is aiming for a rise in revenue and deliveries in 2013 based on the demand for its growing SUV lineup and the new- generation A3 model.

In order to make the A6 saloon and Avant as well as the A7 Sportback models more attractive, Audi unveiled the Black Edition a.k.a. three new models that combine emphatic styling with the most extensive equipment list in each range, and are priced from £35,010 OTR to £56,785 OTR. The first visual impact with this edition shows the impressive 20-inch rotor-design alloy wheels with a dark titanium finish on the A6 saloon and avant and 21-inch wheels on the A7 Sportback.

Moreover, the models come with lowered sports suspension, which is a standard feature of the S line models. Regarding the design, the Black Edition models feature a black finish for the grille and number plate surrounds and the window frame strips but also privacy glass that extends from the B-pillar rearwards.

The A6 Avant comes equipped with black roof rails. The interior was also upgraded and features Piano Black inlays which complement the sports seats upholstered in black Valcona leather and the black headlining The A6 and A7 models feature a Bose surround sound system, DAB digital radio and the Audi Music Interface (AMI) for iPod connection.

Audi introduces its new 313PS Biturbo TDI engine, which is available for the A6 Saloon and Avant as well as for the A7 Sportback models. This new twin-turbo V6 is noted for being the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine offered by the Vorsprung durch Technik brand ever.

It is also notable for being the sweetest-sounding. The engine is available in A6 models priced from £43,810 OTR. Its price in the A7 Sportback begins at £51,645 OTR. It integrates the trademark Audi TDI refinement with an exhaust-mounted sound actuator that enables it to provide a powerful 650Nm output to the tune of a distinctly sporting soundtrack.

The latest V6 is ranking above the single-turbo 204PS and 245PS variants of the 3.0 TDI that are already featured in the A6 and A7 Sportback lineups. The new engine has a two-stage turbocharger group that provides a maximum boost pressure of 3.2 bar, aiding the A6 3.0 BiTDI quattro Saloon to accelerate from a standstill to 62mph in 5.1 seconds. The same acceleration is made in the A6 Avant and A7 Sportback, but in 5.3 seconds. All the variants deliver an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

There is a new ‘one-stop-shop’ option package dubbed Technology Package Advanced that’s offered for all Audi A6 and A7 Sportback models. Any model from the Saloon, Avant, allroad and Sportback lineups could be equipped with nine advanced convenience and occupant protection features such as Google Earth navigation mapping, in-car Wi-Fi and the Audi pre-sense multi-level safety system. Notably, these ranges are already known for being technologically advanced.

The package on the A6 models is priced at £3,250 while on the A7 Sportback, it costs £3,750. This represents savings of at least £1,085 when compared with adding up the cost of the individual options. The Technology Package Advanced has the following entertainment and information enhancements: MMI navigation plus the MMI Touch fingertip recognition system, a color Driver’s Information System, Audi Music Interface iPod connection and a Bluetooth mobile phone interface providing access to Google Earth navigation maps and creating an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.

The A7 Sportback gets a sophisticated head-up display that projects navigation and entertainment information onto the windscreen so that it seems to be floating about two metres in front of the car. With the Technology Package Advanced, the A6 and A7 expand the limits of the worldwide web.

This weekend we’ve witnessed the launch of the 2012 Bmw 6-Series Gran Coupe, a new car that introduces the Bavarian manufacturer into a new segment, a segment launched by the Mercedes-Benz CLS. The war is now starting, as everyone will ask now which car would be the perfect choice for them: the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Audi A7 Sportback or the recently launched Bmw 6-Series Gran Coupe.

I think that when you are choosing a car, you look first at the engines, right? These days, every manufacturer works hard to have fuel-efficient engines but also powerful engines, especially German manufacturers. We’ll start with the petrol engines: the Bmw 6-Series Gran Coupe comes with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line petrol engine delivering 320 hp (640i Gran Coupe), while the Audi A7 Sportback features the well-known 3.0 TFSI V6 engine delivering 300 hp; the Mercedes-Benz CLS offers a 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 306 hp.

The 3.0-liter engine can push the 6-Series Gran Coupe from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds, while the Audi A7 is pushed by its V6 in just 5.6 seconds… still, the Mercedes-Benz CLS is the slowest, with its 6.0 seconds. As expected, all the models have the top speed electronically limited to 155 mph or 250 km/h.

[Update - the 2013 Toyota Avalon was unveiled - read all about it here] - To regain leadership, Toyota has created a plan to release a lineup of new or redesigned products within the next two years. Under the timeframe that Toyota has given, there will be at least 10 products that will appear in dealerships by the end of 2012.

Toyota will undertake a significant change in how it develops its products. Toyota will now lengthen the platform cadence. What Toyota did previously was for the models to be redesigned after every five years and for there to be a slight change in the fascia after the third year. With this new approach, the cycle could be extended to six years but at the midpoint, there will be more significant sheet metal revisions as well as powertrain upgrades.

Toyota revealed that the styling of the global subcompact Yaris will be more aggressive. It will arrive this fall, after having been slightly delayed as its Iwate plant was damaged by the March 11 earthquake. This new version will feature a 98.8-inch wheelbase, making it longer than the existing model by about two inches.

To prevent rear-end collisions, the Audi A7 has been fitted by Robert Bosch GmbH with an automatic emergency braking system that made its debut on the A8. The system detects objects in front by using a video camera and radar.

Bosch system's sensor data analyzes and determines whether braking has to be applied and if so, in what amounts. When a collision is possible, the brakes are prepared for use and a warning alarm will sound.

If the warning is not heeded, maximum braking occurs about half a second prior to the impact. The electronic stability control of Bosch will then help bring the vehicle to an orderly stop. The A7 is Audi’s second liftback model. This vehicle competes against the Jaguar XF and the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

The new Audi A7 five-door coupe is now offered with the high-beam assist system dubbed as the SmartBeam. Based in the U.S., Gentex manufactures automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based driver-assist systems. A miniature camera-on-a-chip is combined with algorithmic decision-making. This allows for the automatic operation of a vehicle's high beams so that its usage could be optimized depending on the surrounding traffic conditions.

The system optimizes forward lighting while it eradicates the repetitive task of manually turning the high beams on and off. SmartBeam is also applied on a Gentex auto-dimming mirror, which automatically darkens to get rid of the glare from the vehicles’ headlamps that approach from the rear. The all-new Audi A7 has a starting price of $59,250 (exclusive of $875 destination charge, taxes, title, options, and dealer charges) for the 3.0T quattro Tiptronic version.

It is equipped with the following as standard: 18-inch wheels with all-season tires, Xenon plus headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights, leather seating surfaces, power, heated front seats with driver lumbar support, automatic power tailgate, Audi drive select, SIRIUS satellite radio, Audi Music Interface, Bluetooth telephone and music player connection, Homelink, Keyless go, power sunroof, 3-zone automatic climate control, and automatic headlights with light/rain sensor.

Audi is strengthening the defenses of its A7 Sportback range by offering quattro all-wheel-drive reassurance for more variants of the acclaimed executive class fastback.

Early next month, new models of 3.0-litre TDI quattro 204PS will be available to order to coincide with a new Standard trim level, which will be available exclusively with this engine. In new Standard form, the A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI will lower the range entry price to £39,995 OTR.

The new price of the new A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI quattro will just be above at £41,675 OTR. In addition, the ‘entry level’ V6 TDI engine has only been offered in conjunction with front-wheel-drive and the eight-speed multitronic continuously variable transmission until now.

Sales will start this May for Audi’s 2012 A7 Sportback, a premium hatchback that’s slotted between the A6 and the A8. With this new model, Audi is entering a new niche. Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen said that the A7 Sportback is meant to be an “avant-garde alternative” for those who are considering the Jaguar XJ and BMW 7 series.

Right before the start of the New York auto show, de Nysschen was interviewed and he claimed that the A7 Sportback is targeted at those who want a car that’s “more emotionally styled” but will have the driving dynamics and the safety features that are available on the A8 or a 7 series.

He also pointed to the Mercedes-Benz CLS as a rival for this car. Audi is undertaking projects such as the A7 to expand its lineup so that it can raise U.S. sales to 150,000 vehicles in 2015. Audi had its best year ever in the U.S. in 2010 with sales totaling 101,629 vehicles.

German tuner Pogea Racing offers an aftermarket kit for the Audi A7, giving the model a set of tech modifications as well as red decals on the sides of the car. Pogea also created new ECU maps for both the 3.0 TFSI and 3.0 TDI units of the vehicle.

The 3.0-liter TDI Multitronic, which is Audi’s continuously variable transmission, delivers 204 hp and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. But with Pogea’s tweaks, its output has been boosted to 251 hp and 468 Nm (345 lb-ft) of torque.

It also upgraded the 3.0 TDI S-Tronic (the carmaker’s double clutch gearbox), from having a stock output of 245 hp and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, to 289 hp and 555 Nm (409 lb-ft) of torque. Meanwhile, the output of the turbocharged petrol 3.0 TFSI unit increased from 300 hp and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque to 345 hp and 495 Nm (365 lb-ft) of torque.

ABT has prepared an aftermarket package for the 2011 Audi A7 Sportback that targets the vehicle’s engine, suspension and exterior. It’s interesting how ABT uses the words “magical moment” and “elegant feline predator” for this modification kit.

Both the 3.0-liter TFSI (which generates 245 hp and 450 Nm in stock form) and 3.0-liter TDI V6 (with a stock output of 300 hp) engines have received upgrades. ABT has a two-stage power upgrade for the oil-burner, with the output increased to 282 hp and 500 Nm or 310 hp and 610 Nm.

The output of the supercharged petrol unit has also been raised to 410 hp. The connection to the road was also modified, with the installation of a Level Control module that lowers the air suspension. ABT offers options for a set of custom lightweight alloy rims.

Audi’s new A7 Sportback in China will be introduced in September 2011, according to Dominique Boesch, general manager of the Audi Sales Division at FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co Ltd. In an interview with the Beijing Times, Boesch said that the new A7 Sportback will make its debut along with the new Audi A8.

It was in mid-2010 that the Audi A7 Sportback was introduced in Europe but its first public appearance had actually taken place in September at the Paris Auto Show. There are four V6 engine options available for this new model: two gasoline and two diesel.

The gasoline units include the 2.8 FSI (which delivers 204 hp and 280 Nm of torque), coupled with S tronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive (the new generation which debuted on the RS 5), and the 3.0 TFSI (300 hp 440 Nm of torque), which is mated with the S tronic and the quattro powertrain as well.

Audi expects its A7 coupe-styled four-door car to attract new buyers to the brand. The first-generation A7 started selling in Europe this month and it is slated to arrive in showrooms in global markets through next year. It will arrive in the US next spring.

Audi plans to sell about 200,000 units of the A7. Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi's sales chief, said that the company expects new customers to account for two-thirds of all buyers worldwide. He said that the A7 is the "next step-up from the Audi A6 segment” which has had high growth rates worldwide.

The first Audi model to get one – the A7 has a head-up display that shows the vehicle's most important data onto the windshield.

Audi has recently announced that the Audi A7 Sportback will start arriving at showrooms throughout Europe at the end of October. It can be recalled that in January 2008, the concept car was previewed at the Detroit Auto Show. The engine options for this model are comprised of three powerplants -- two gasoline engines and a diesel unit.

The entry-level engine is a 2.8 liter FSI V6 that develops 204 hp and has a fuel economy rating of 8.0 liters per 100 km (29,4 mpg). Then there’s the 2.0 forced-induction TFSI engine that delivers 300 hp, returns a fuel economy of 8.2 liters per 100 km and has CO2 emissions of 190 grams per km.

The diesel option is a 3.0 TDI unit, which develops 245 hp and emits 158 grams of CO2 per km. In Germany, the Audi A7 Sportback is priced from EUR51,650. The model will be offered in numerous markets throughout the globe next year. Audi predicts sales of about 200,000 units.
